WASHINGTON Perilously close to a government shutdown, President Barack Obama and congressional leaders forged agreement late Friday night on a deal to cut more than $37 billion in federal spending and avert the first closure in 15 years.
Obama hailed the deal as "the biggest annual spending cut in history," and House Speaker John Boehner said that over the next decade it would cut government spending by $500 billion.
"This is historic, what we've done," said the third man in the talks, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

You realize the budget actually GROWS more than $200B year over year, right>
Now this is something Boehner can rightly cry about. SPANKED by Harry Reid!
“If Dingy Harry likes it it cant be good for the country.”
This of course was the problem from the get-go - how do you make a deal that cuts spending and pays our troops and keeps essential things funded, when you are dealing with a guy who is willing to shut down the govt over funding of baby-killing PP?
If it took 2 *months* to get to merely $40 billion in cuts, it does not bode well for ..
- raising the debt ceiling, where we need an ironclad balanced budget in 10 years to justify raising it
- 2012 budget, where the GOP wants to cut $7 TRILLION from the 10-year baseline

Thousands of unborn babies will never be available for comment.
Imagine what they'll do with the Ryan plan.
That’s funny!
The biggest fight is ahead and it will be a long fight, well beyond the 2012 budget. It is not realistic to expect the ship to do a 180 degree turn when the US has become drunk on spending far beyond our means. Long, Long fight. Even the $61 Billion cut all true conservatives saw as a minimum, is chump change in the total picture of what needs to follow. The Dims and Barry swore the Senate would never let a vote come to the floor on Obummer Care or the Abortionist funding. It looks like both of these will go to a vote. Undoubtedly the dims will vote it down. Not surprising but individuals go on permanent record where they voted. Some may argue that has little value heading into the 2012 voting cycle; I believe it is of great value as tangible fodder for the long, long fight. $61 Billion minimum- yep that is what I believed but Boehner got $39. When is the last time a $39 billion or greater cut in the budget has happened in Congress? We have trillions to go so I hope conservatives do not confuse this skirmish as the definitive battle in this long, long fight. Only after the November 2012 elections might we start the real offensive. Until then, we have got to pick them off as we can. More guerrilla warfare and positioning than all-out offensive. Plenty of reasonable conservatives may disagree with me. Okay, but in any case are we in this for the long fight?
They promised $100B they cut that to $61B then settled on $37B. In what way is that 80%?
The more Bachmann speaks, the less impressed I am by her. If the pubs can do no better than what they’ve shown this week, then the Republic is doomed.
Meanwhile, a lonely Nancy Pilosi pours herself another double Scotch.
Both Rand Paul and the Republican Study Group have budget plans that take us to balance in under 8 years!
We need budgets like that on Obama’s desk ... SIGNED.
Either do it NOW or get the President and Senate we need to do it later.
Remember that they've passed several CR's already, each time with cuts.
I think the total comes to something like $81 B.
The GOP ran that they would defund obamacare. They didn’t say “Elect us to the house and we’ll defund obamacare IF the senate goes GOP, too.” And right after the election they started backtracking saying “We can’t win in the senate so there’s no use in bringing it up.”
Funding starts in the house. They broke their promise.
“Do you really think that once the government was shut down, that Obama would have any incentive to reopen it, as opposed to restructuring it by emergency powers?”

Ah, the true voice of reason. Good grief people, the war is not over. It is just beginning.
“Do you really think that once the government was shut down, that Obama would have any incentive to reopen it, as opposed to restructuring it by emergency powers?”
Exactly!!!
Do Freepers realize ...
FOODSTAMPS WERE GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE SENT BUT TROOPS WERENT BEING PAID.
That is bogus. The Democrats wanted a shutdown to pin around the Republicans. They WANTED a crisis. that gives the President more power.
I like you. You have my sense of humor.
Did you follow the WI SCOWI justice race, the extra 7000 votes found and the premature victory dance by libs and DU posts then and when reality set in that they lost big? That was gold.
This budget includes past spending from last October and future spending until September, the CRs are part of that. There are no “extra” cuts.
what universer are you talking about? :D Harry still needs to grow a pair. His nanny Nancy was off blabbing her mouth out. He didn’t have the support he needed.
