You’re both wrong. They were arguing about whether port is right or left.

They're both wrong. Port is a fortified wine...

Don’t know yet. Still searching to identify the time of the incident. If the time corresponds to salat . . .and it coincides with the mayor touring the vessel . . .hmmmm?

Diesel/electric subs are still used by a lot of navies worldwide. They’re actually quieter than a nucular (tm GWB) sub when running on battery power, although of course they don’t have the speed or endurance. They are actually a significant threat to surface fleets operating fairly close to shore, because they’re harder to detect and thus can slip into missile or torpedo range more easily. Plus they’re a lot cheaper than a nuke sub and easier to maintain and operate.

Oh! One of my favorite submarine movies, in the LONG version! DAS BOOT.

It makes getting outside a great experience even in winter!

Anyone find the contradictory humor in a shooting on board a nuclear submarine called Astute? Besides me of course....

I don't see where the sub's name is all that contradictory or humorous in this case.

However, late last year when the Astute ran aground off the coast of Scotland...

Diesel subs are still in wide use. The Germans and others still build them for other countries’ navies (and their own, I suppose). The Taiwanese have been trying to buy a number of them against strong opposition from their mainland cousins. I believe the Iranians have a couple and their level of stealth is worrisome to our navy.

An officer was killed and another is fighting for his life after a shooting spree by a sailor on board the Royal Navy's flagship nuclear submarine. Read more: Daily Mail

You watch... they'll extend their gun control laws to apply to the armed services. Then they'll be the disarmed services.

More yellow journalism using a headline not designed to inform but to con people into buying a paper. What does “One dead in nuke sub horror” bring to mind? A radiation leak, core meltdown, slow and painful death? No, someone got shot and just happened to be aboard a nuke sub at the time. No wonder newspapers are going out of business.

This is wrong on so many levels:

1. It's nuclear.

2. It's a SUBMARINE!

Seaman!
If you say “left” or “right” again, instead of “port” and “starboard”, I’m going to shove you out of one of those little windows!

There are subs that use nuclear power plants that can operate with natural circualtion, the main coolant pumps are only required at higher power levels. The USS Narwhal used natural circulation and I believe the S8G reactor (Ohio class)design also uses natural circulation. I served on S5W reactor plants so I don’t know if the main sea water pumps are required (to condense steam) when the reactor plan is operating in natural circulation.
