I understand what you’re saying, GonzoGop, but sometimes you kill so many enemy that you just run out of bullets, there’s no supply coming up to the frontline and all you got left is a bayonet and a K-Bar.
Lots of Marines and soldiers had to do with only bayonets on Guadalcanal and Makin. We buried a Marine - 2nd Marine Raiders - three years ago who died on Makin because he ran out of ammo. He did his duty by setting up the Japs to believe the landing was coming at Makin, not Guadalcanal. It worked.
I want to get these Marines who landed at Makin - all of them - given at least a Navy cross and present them to their families.
