WASHINGTON The U.S. government's new system to replace the five color-coded terror alerts will have two levels of warnings elevated and imminent that will be relayed to the public only under certain circumstances for limited periods of time, sometimes using Facebook and Twitter, according to a draft Homeland Security Department plan obtained by The Associated Press.
Some terror warnings could be withheld from the public entirely if announcing a threat would risk exposing an intelligence operation or an ongoing investigation, according to the government's confidential plan.
Like a gallon of milk, the new terror warnings will each come with a stamped expiration date.

Note how AP always smears anything regarding US security. It’s reflexive for them.

Just once... just ONCE... can we have a stinking PRIVATE communication channel that the damn GOVERNMENT doesn’t take over for its nefarious purposes?
Actually, it’s not a bad idea.
A couple of decades ago, you could reach almost everybody via newspaper, radio, and TV. But who reads newspapers anymore? How many really listen to radio? Even TV viewership is falling, thanks to on-demand video (and generally crappy programming, along with 500 cable channels diluting the viewership even further).
So, getting the word out via “social media”, which is very popular with the demographics least likely to follow the “news”, is actually a pretty smart concept.
How much money is changing hands for this and what does it have to with Gibbs going to work at facebook?
@Napolitanoswatch OMG WTF biowar @ NYC we gonerz now
Hummmm. Won’t this make it necessary for the government to supply all subjects, er, citizens, er, residents regardless of legal status, with a computer and high-speed Internet access?
lol
“How much money is changing hands for this and what does it have to with Gibbs going to work at facebook?”
These are great questions and I bet the article doesn’t answer them..
And I am so glad we aren’t on either Facebook or twitter.
How many $billions are in 0bama’s budget for facebook and twitter and youtube? Are we the taxpayers also paying for his campaign?
Does that mean we have to “Friend” Janet Incompetano to find out if the muzzies are up to no good?
You have absolutely NO IDEA how many people absolutely do not Tweet- Twitter- or anything else remotely like that. Lots of us never do Facebook because of the incredibly high amount of personal information goes awry.
Some of us actually have conversations face to face!!!
I am Generation Y and I read the newspaper everyday in the school library. I also listen to radio in the morning, afternoon as well as the evening.
I have transitioned away from blogs, tweets and facebook for news. I mainly use the internet for two main news sites: BBC and this site.
There are still tons of people doing those things that you describe.
Social media is cool and all but personally I’m just sick of the whole hoopla. Traditional media(other than TV) is quiet and allows me to concentrate. No flickering ads everywhere, movie ads that take up the whole screen, pop-ups, and all the other annoying things.
Internet has its place but its just one big mess.
Have to admit, I have been thinking of closing my fb acct for that very reason. It was interesting at first having old friends on my friends list I hadnt seen in 25 years, but honestly how well do they know you if you havent seen them for that long? What reason is there to keep the acct if you would gain more by talking to them over the phone, or face to face?
