Unions slam Obama for withholding shutdown plans
Hotair ^ | April 5, 2011

“Federal employees are being held hostage because these plans are not being made available,” said William R. Dougan, president of the National Federation of Federal Employees, whose members include civilian Defense Department workers. “It’s disrespectful to hold these folks in limbo until the last minute.”

He called “inexcusable” the government’s decision not to tell federal workers who would be sent home and who would be told to keep working.

It was some of the strongest rhetoric that federal unions have used against a White House that has generally had the support of government unions. As a shutdown has loomed for weeks, with the clock running out at midnight Friday, the Office of Management and Budget has ordered federal agencies to remain mum on details.

During the three weeks when the government closed in 1996, 284,000 employees designated as nonessential were furloughed, union officials said. And 800,000 were told not to go to work during the five-day government shutdown in 1995.

Among those sent home in 1995 were IRS employees, NTEU officials said. With two weeks until the April 18 tax filing deadline, a shutdown could cause delays in processing returns, Kelley said.

So we can do without 1 million government employees?! /s

Can’t think of a better group to permanently furlough than IRS employees. They can cash everyone else’s tax payments, but thousands of IRS employees do not pay taxes because they are some how exempt.

Any gov’t worker who has attended an office birthday party on ‘company’ time, paid with ‘company’ money, gets to stay home. — Until we call you.

Government unions complaining that no one in the government knows what the heck is going on...?

They got their retarded leadership, now no one knows what is going to happen.

Many warned about this years back, but we lost.

I hope they get the chaos they created.

thousands of IRS employees do not pay taxes because they are some how exempt.

What is the basis for this statement? Federal employees pay federal taxes just like every other wage earner.

Tax delinquents include IRS contractors, federal employees

March 15, 2011

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, or TIGTA, says existing practices within the IRS let tax agency contractors get paid even though they owed back taxes.

Eleven IRS contractors received more than $356 million in payments from Uncle Sam in 2009 despite owing a combined $3.8 million in back taxes, according to the new TIGTA report bluntly titled Existing Practices Allowed IRS Contractors to Receive Payments While Owing Delinquent Taxes.

TIGTA also identified five contractors with delinquent taxes totaling approximately $4.2 million that were not included in the IRS’ automated Federal Payment Levy Program, or FPLP.

Federal workers also owe Uncle Sam: On the individual side of unpaid taxes, federal employees regularly appear high on the tax debtors list.

“Colleen M. Kelley, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, said she was told last month by Office of Personnel Management Director John Berry and OMB Chief Performance Officer Jeffrey Zients that “plans aren’t finalized, and they don’t expect there to be a shutdown.” But she said she was skeptical.

“It seems totally incredible to me that agencies would not have their plans finalized at this point,” Kelley said.

The unions are “moving forward to make sure our voices are heard,” she said. She urged civil servants, their families and their friends to call their senators and Congress members Tuesday to express opposition to a shutdown and to a bill passed by the GOP-controlled House that calls for $61 billion in budget cuts. Employees are supposed to make the calls in their free time.”

They are worried about $61B...and employees “are supposed to make the calls in their free time.”

Clueless...especially after Ryan’s budget today.

“Although Obama and congressional leaders are committed to avoiding a shutdown, “given the realities of the calendar, good management requires that we continue contingency planning for an orderly shutdown should the negotiations not be completed by” Friday, Zients said.

Each agency is responsible for determining which functions are essential during a shutdown and which employees must report for duty.”

They are lusting for a shutdown...won’t work this time.

They are trying to scare seniors with their rhetoric again.

Won’t work this time because seniors have been paying attention. They filled the town hall meetings on Obamacare, and they are watching everything that is going on now.

Paul Ryan’s “fix” for medicare sounds really good.

He is one force that I don’t think they will be able to stifle.
