Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who oversaw the burning of a Koran last month, said he did not feel responsible for the violent protest at a United Nations compound in Afghanistan today that left at least 11 dead. Instead, he said the violence proved his point.
"We wanted to raise awareness of this dangerous religion and dangerous element," Jones said. "I think [today's attack] proves that there is a radical element of Islam."
As for the 11 dead, which included seven U.N. staffers and guards, Jones told "Nightline" anchor Bill Weir, "We do not feel responsible, no."
The deaths followed a protest march in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif today against the Koran burning. Jones supervised while another pastor, Wayne Sapp, soaked the Koran in kerosene and burned it.
"We decided to put the Koran on trail," he told Weir. "I was the judge but I did not determine the verdict. I was just a type of referee so that people got their time to defend or condemn the Koran."
Jones said that a "jury" of people from all over Florida debated the radicalism of Islam, and the "Koran was found guilty."
"If the Koran was found guilty then there were four forms of punishment: burning, shredding, grounding, a firing squad," he said. "The one that the people chose was burning. That is why the Koran was burned after it was found guilty."

Pre-meditated, brutal murder is always difficult to discuss, or at least it should be. Thanks for the post.
There are nuts....Jones and his supporters ARE NOT the nuts
The nuts are the Muslims...and anyone who attacks Jones and his followers for what they did.
Their point was proven.
If I were a Company Comander in Afghanistan, I would think about visiting Pastor Jones on my return and kicking the sh!t out of this attention whore. I dont like rabid dogs but, recognizing their nature, Im not going to poke them with a stick unnecessarily.
This would be like a Company Commander kicking the sh— out of a German-American after returning from WW II.
Jones did the right thing. He proved his point. You and your Company Commander probably should not go down to Gainesville, FL....or any other real American place.
Time for people to stand up against Islam....not back down
Yes, I support his exercising his First Amendment rights.
If we are forced to walk a psychic mine field to avoid upsetting global Islam, then we are Dhimmis. Rather than having to live life being afraid of the reaction of the Islamic mob, I would prefer the global Islamic mob be afraid of US for a change.
I did not ask if you supported his 1st Amendment rights. I asked if you supported his actions and the results. Would you do them yourself? Yes or No?
Yes.
Fair enough, you put your cards on the table which is what I asked.
I don’t excuse the Taliban or muslims that did this whatsoever and the differences in the values of muslim vs. Judeo/Christian cultures is glaringly obvious. But I am also mindful of and care about those innocents elsewhere who might get killed over me exercising my 1st Amendment rights while I sit here in the relative safety of the good ol’ U.S. of A.
Thanks for the link with that update. It makes me roll my eyes. And I find it pretty interesting that General Petraeus intervened with Jones against his koran-burning actions.
