Ratings Down for Fox, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck (Maddow UP, CNN also UP)
Opposing Views.com ^ | 3/31/11 | Mark Berman

Ratings for Fox News are in the doldrums, down 21% in primetime so far this year. But don't cry for the right-leaning network -- it's been number one on cable for nine years now, and it still has the top 12 shows.

According to a report from Business Insider, Bill O'Reilly remains in the top spot, but he lost 14% of his audience from the same three-month period last year. Sean Hannity places second, down 19%. Bret Baier (whoever he is) is third, beating out Glenn Beck, who has lost a whopping 30% of his audience.

CNN and MSNBC have been the beneficiaries of Fox's decline. CNN is up by 28%, led by Anderson Cooper's 18% rise, and MSNBC saw a 9% ratings growth. Its star Rachel Maddow has 16% more viewers.

Business Insider speculates on the possible reason:

This time period last year was dominated by the health care debate and for much of that period Fox operated as an extension of the opposition. Now that the nation's focus is international it's harder to figure out an angle where Obama is bad and...nuclear meltdowns and Qadaffi are good.

Another explanation could be that CNN and MSNBC have been doing so poorly in recent years that there was no place else to go but up.

O’Reilly’s format needs revamping.

Replacing the host would be a good start.

Maybe, but he’s better than anyone on any of the alphabets. There isn’t one of the others that will give conservatism an occasional fair hearing.

Fox does that, and O’Reilly among them.

Fox is in trouble. I barely watch anymore.

Fox has fallen far in this household. My wife will only watch some of Greta. The rest is gone & especially Hannity. I like Beck but I don't see him regularly. Otherwise it is sports on TV, radio & this site. Thanks again to JR.

O’reilly has his tounge so far up Obama’s butt that he is difficult to understand.

Beck will not give BC any coverage

Will watch BOR if Trump is on.

BOR did say, paraphrasing,......”If Kansas passes this law of showing birth certificate in order to vote, then OBAMA WON’T BE ABLE TO”......Then he laughed like a heyena!

If only they'd replace Newt, Tokyo Rove, Beckle, Juan Williams, Dana PerRINO and BOR, they'd pick up many of the "lost" viewers, IMO.

WOW that's a sad sack bunch.

FOX in the evening needs some fresh faces. Give Megyn an evening slot. Put Beck on later.

Tell Bill he is getting boring. Tell Hannity to get rid of the panel and do more in depth news.

Maybe bring over Stossel.

Lots they could do.

They need to be careful, they are losing much audience from the right.

Time to shake it up at FOX. They still are far better than their counterparts.

Why I need to see the numbers

Example (numbers are made up to prove a point):

If Hannity last year had 1,000,000 viewer and this year had and this years has 810,000 views, he is down 19%

If Maddow had 100 views last year and 116 viewers this yeat that is an increase of 16%

But 810,000 viewers is still a heck of a lot more than 116

I would watch FOX News again if it would take your suggestion.I hate O’Reilly, Shep, and Geraldo. Some of the others bug me also.

I now get my news on the net.

I’ve quit watching and FOX has much to do with it’s own vulnerability, as they have become stale as day old coffee. they’ve worn out the Fair & Balanced schtick which has become nothing but a verbal bitch fest and BOR, Hannity and Sheppy have become repetitious and uninspired....it’s too late for new voices or personalities, most conservatives find their news other places. There’s a lot of room for new players though.

Well it’s a down year but next year during the Plotical Season things will pick.
Of course it depends on what candidates emerge for the GOP nomination.

You have a point. But why is there such a savage assault on Fox led by Media Matters' threat of outright sabotage, etc.? Fox must be doing something right.

Judging from comments here at FR I think it's much safer to be an enemy of conservatives than their friend. With guns pointed at each other in a circular firing squad, conservatives seem happier annihilating each other on the basis of ideological "purity" than presenting a unified assault on the real enemy.

Rachel Maddow has 16% more viewers.

She went from 6 to 7.
