Soviet officials lied about the success of Yuri Gagarin's historic 1961 flight into space and covered up the fact that he had landed more than 200 miles away from where they were expecting him, a new book discloses.
The Soviet Union held up his mission, the first manned flight into space, as a major Cold War propaganda coup, portraying it as a glitch-free triumph of Communist ideology.
However, a new book published on the eve of the fiftieth anniversary of Gagarin's famous flight has revealed that scientists twice miscalculated where he would land which is why there was nobody there to meet him when he finally touched down some 500 miles south of Moscow.
"For many years Soviet literature claimed that Yuri Gagarin and his Vostok landing capsule had come down in the area it was supposed to," according to the book, titled 108 Minutes That Changed the World.
"(But) this information was far from the truth," it added, saying Soviet space planners had been expecting him to land almost 250 miles further to the south. "So it turned out that nobody was waiting or looking for Yuri Gagarin. Therefore the first thing he had to do after landing was set off to look for people and communications so he could tell the leadership where he was."

Russian Roswell.
In the UFO Files
The History Channel,
Sunday 5th March, 2006
"Russia has a long history of UFO sightings.
SNIP: "Kapustin Yar was created as the site for the development of the Soviet Unions space program after the end of World War II which is 500 miles south of Moscow and about 60 miles east of Volgograd, the former Stalingrad."
"Kapustin Yar was the former Soviet Unions most sensitive air base, even exceeding Americas Area 51 for the levels of secrecy that shrouded it."
"UFO Files claimed that it was to present never-before-seen footage of the base, reconnaissance photos and even a virtual tour of its hidden depths."
However upon reading further:
The report told of how "one of Russias most well-known 'ufologists' Vladimir Azhazha (sometimes spelled Ajaja)took the researchers on a tour of a site close to Kapustin Yar where he claimed a UFO had crashed. Dowsing with copper rods, he found an elliptical area where he claimed that an alien craft had plummeted to Earth in 1961. He said that animals avoided the area, no cattle will graze there and strange energies affect your pulse rate and breathing."
A local resident, Zoya Shubenkina, corroborated Azhazhas story about the 1961 crash, claiming she had witnessed it for herself. She said a big, fiery, red sphere flew over her house and crashed in the valley by the river."
Coincidence??? Really? 1961? Location? UFO?
or Yuri in his Vostok landing capsule???
"The 2006 Russian Roswell report then asks: Was Moscows leap into space aided by reverse-engineering alien craft?
If true.... Then WOW!
I do recall reading accounts of an orbiting Russian craft that could not return to earth. Supposedly sources in other countries could, for a few days, hear the astronauts radio for help. Then the voices of the astronauts and the signal itself, grew weaker and stopped. This would fit Russia’s history but I shudder to think it may be true. A friend who was a physicist said that the much bragged about ‘first woman in space’, also a Russian, has rather complete virtigo and must be helped to sit upright or stand because her ear drums burst upon ‘landing’...But the Russians never admitted to that publicly. And let’s just talk about the Russian decision to bounce a capsule off of land instead of waves, shall we...?
AS I recall, his flight doesn’t even meet the criteria for a true space flight and return to earth. Mainly because he didn’t make a landing with the ship, he ejected from the craft before it landed. The Soviets hid that fact for years.
Did Ari wander off and go knock knock knocking on someone's door??
Эй я посадил как насчет прибытие, чтобы подобрать меня!!
[Borrows the phone: Hey I landed, how about sending someone to pick me up]
There is so much deception in Soviet history, used to protect Soviet pride, that claiming a UFO landing to cover scientific embarrassment seems likely. As another poster said, the Soviets are rumored to have astronauts dying in their attempts to win the space race so why wouldn’t the Soviets tell ‘peasants’ (anyone who wasn’t in Moscow, basically) that it was UFO’s? If not UFO’s then some other lie to cover those circumstances and/or everyone talking about the lie disappears forever or learns to stop talking.
I also think, in addition to UFO’s, that this page describing cosmonaut deaths probably holds some truth too. Here’s the link and I’ll put a summary below:

A LIST OF THE SUSPECTED LOST COSMONAUTS THE BROTHERS CLAIM TO HAVE RECORDED
May 1960 Unnamed cosmonaut lost when his orbiting space capsule veered off course.
November 1960 The brothers picked up an SOS message in Morse code from a troubled spacecraft.
February 1961 Recorded the suffocation of a cosmonaut.
April 1961 Just prior to Yuri Gagarins flight, a capsule circled the Earth three times before re-entering the Earths atmosphere.
May 1961 Weak calls for help from an orbiting capsule.
October 1961 A Soviet spacecraft veered off course and vanished into deep space.
November 1962 A space capsule bounced off the Earths atmosphere during re-entry and disappeared.
November 1963 Unnamed female cosmonaut perished on re-entry.
April 1964 Cosmonaut lost when capsule burnt up on re-entry.
If you want on or off this ping list, please FReepmail me.
I don’t think this is big news to anyone. Gagarin landed out in the boonies and relied on his survival training until he was located and brought back to his hero’s parade.
Here’s an old link from an old file on the drive, and it’s still working:

I also mailed you something.
Well done, Boogieman. I look forward to more CC Pings.
Heck, that’s no different from the moon landing that we faked on a Burbank sound stage!
Thanks for all the info!
This is actually the first time I’ve ever heard of it. It was a bit surprising when I initially saw it, but not so much when I thought about it a little. They did all of their early missions in secrecy. Anything could have happened, and all we had to go on is what they told the world.
(I’ll read the entirety of the PM you sent when I get a month or two off work. lol /jk)
Wow thanks for the link - I really enjoyed watching that.
Amazing - I never heard about this before. Thanks for the link.
Please add me to the list. THANKS!
“great graphic!”
I lifted it from Google image search. I was going to try to make something myself, but I don’t have photoshop on my new computer and got frustrated with the online image editors.
