The Senate voted 40-10 to constitutionally ban same-sex marriage. Three Democrats joined every Senate Republican in voting yes.
Auburn Republican Dennis Kruse, who sponsored the amendment, says the 25-year-old state law banning gay marriage belongs in the constitution.
"The family is the basic unit of our society, and has been since Adam and Eve (were) created," Kruse says. "Marriage is, and should be, the union of one man and one woman."
Opponents contend the tide of public opinion has turned in favor of gay marriage since the amendment fight started six years ago, and that the trend is accelerating. They point to polls showing pluralities in favor of same-sex marriage in Indiana and nationally, and argue opposition to a ban is even stronger among younger Americans.
Supporters of a ban counter that all 30 states which have put the ban on the ballot have approved it, although Arizona needed two tries to do so.
The House had approved the proposal 70-26 last month. The Senate vote completes the first step in the amendment process.
Legislators must now wait till after next year's election, then approve it again in 2013 or 2014. Voters would then get the final say in the fall election in 2014.

I don't know of any rational state where an amendment like this has had a problem passing. And I don't see Indiana going bat-sh*t crazy like Massachussetts or California over the next two years.

This website,NCSL, states that Thirty-seven states currently have statutory Defense of Marriage Acts, while wikipedia states that As of March 2011, 41 states prohibit same-sex marriage via state statutes or state constitutions.and that 28 states have approved constitutional amendments .
Voters need to know this. They need to know who the Party of Perversion is.
Most people considered Iowa to be a rational state, and yet, they can't get a referendum approval past one house or another. Indiana had a chance years ago, but Democrat majorities kept it from going before the voters. It can happen again in 2 years, if the voters don't wise up.

Issuing marriage licenses and regulating them is a state matter.

Propaganda. The only poll that matters is the one evidenced in state and federal legislation and the one evidenced in ballot initiatives. Homosexual sex and any supposed 'marriage' premised upon homosexual sex has been historically rejected by society and declared self destructive -- without value -- something to prohibit not something to promote. It is a sickness that these leftists promote because they themselves are a sickness.
