Japan Mulls Using Tanker to Remove Radiation-Tainted Water

Tokyo, March 30 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government is considering using a tanker ship to collect radiation-tainted water from a quake-damaged nuclear plant, its top spokesman said Wednesday.

The government is also considering blanketing broken parts of the plant's reactor buildings with special cloth to keep radioactive substances from spreading, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said at a news conference.

Experts are discussing such options in order to limit radioactive contamination in areas around the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant to a minimum, he said.

No conclusion has been reached, he said. The government will have to make a decision some time, he said.

He also said it will take substantial time to bring down the temperatures of nuclear fuel rods at the plant to relatively stable levels.

The Japanese should put the radioactive water into several double-hulled oil tankers. Then, they should promptly park these tankers around Somalia. Maybe some pirates will hijack these tankers and hold it for ransom.

LOL! That’s actually not a bad idea. Greenies would freak about it though.

Where the heck will they put that water ? The sunken lake in Antarctica ? Perhaps in the middle of the desert and let it evaporate, but the radioactive particles will still remain as particulates in the salt. Can they filter out the radiative particulates ? Or are some of the elements actually dissolved into solution ? Another story with a video about the cloth. So they must have lots of steam and water vapor then ? Later.

Great, a big radioactive supertanker. At what point do they run out of tankers to hold the water that needs to be dumped on the reactors?

At what point is the radioactive steam that is being released become something they also need to try and contain? What's next, hot air balloons?

The situation with these reactors in Japan is definitely desperate. I hope they can find a way to contain this from getting any worse.

You better rethink that one.

Penguins, stay away from oil tankers or you will glow in the dark. On the bright side, killer whales and sharks will stay away from you.:-)

The Japanese should contract with an African nation to build them a pyramid out of concrete made from this radioactive water. The pyramid will glow in the dark (very impressive!) and trap the radioactivity

Mulls? As soon as someone recommended it, they should have jumped on the idea and gotten a tanker in there. This is the whole problem over there. Actions are too slow.

They've said publicly that the response effort has been hindered by too much bureaucracy. We saw the same thing here during the Gulf cleanup, but it doesn't appear that we learned anything from the experience.

Is Japan planning on sinking the tanker once its NO longer needed? It seems to me that the tanker will be highly radioactive.

A soon to be published study by the Japanese Science ministry shows that whale blubber is highly effective as nuclear shielding and at removing radiation from contaminated water.

Japanese culture requires consent from all involved.

BTW a tanker is an industrial strength dump idea. Now you have a radioactive ship to dispose of.
