If he’s playing rope-a-dope with the long form BC, fine by me. But I think the argument that no doctors have come forward is lame. An OB-GYN delivers thousands of babies over a career. Why should this particular one stand out 50 years later as being something memorable? Hawaii claims that HIPAA precludes its releasing the long form BC, so I doubt some bureaucrat is going to risk their job and/or jail time by contacting the doctor listed on the long form BC to alert them that they had delivered a future POTUS. Thus, absent publicity, why would even a doctor who was practicing OB in Honolulu way back when necessarily think s/he was the one who delivered Obama? The administration can’t even provide a straight story about which hospital he was born in.
On a related point, Trump has already tossed out bone-headed comments about not having seen any pictures of Obama before age 14. Yet we all know that such pictures exist, so it weakens his credibility to be ruminating about such easily fact-checked stuff. Once people see some of the infant pictures of Obama in conjunction with Trump’s absurd claims, they will properly begin to wonder “Gee, if he’s wrong about that, maybe he’s wrong about the BC too. Maybe that COLB posted on-line is legit after all and Trump’s just a partisan trying to stir up trouble.”
The fact is, for anyone following the story, Trump’s “facts” are old news. He isn’t persuading ANYONE who already knows there’s a big problem, nor those who are convinced the COLB is genuine. The only group he can persuade are those who haven’t paid attention to the issue, for whom a simple question “why not just show us the BC?” seems quite reasonable. And that’s a group that by definition has a very short attention span (else they’d have given this issue some thought long ago).
So IMHO, Trump is playing a risky game here. I’m glad he’s raising the visibility of the issue, but if he bobbles it, that’s going to make it that much riskier for some other high profile person to try and keep the issue alive.
