I envision a scene wherein one of the thugs takes time out of his burning and smashing to answer the question: Why are you doing this?
And he answers, “Why not do it?”.

Who, in a spiritually, morally and financially exhausted, society could give a satisfactory answer to the thuggish rejoinder?

Apparently no one in authority can so in effect they shrug and say, “Carry on, old chap, carry on. Sorry to have bothered you.”
