Radiation levels in the U.S., particularly on the west coast, will continue to gradually increase so long as the Fukishima plant keeps spewing out radiation.

The government is also considering bailing water out of reactor #3.

How would you like to be the guy who gets that job. I'm fairly certain Saturday Night Live made a joke about it back when TMI happened. But the idea of putting humans anyplace near water that has been in that reactor for a serious amount of time is unpleasant to say the least. Water itself doesn't hold much radiation, but if the core has partially melted there are a lot of water soluble oxides that it can carry off. We need to start seeing some of that legendary Japanese robot tech on this project.

There have been various reports that Japan is considering upgrading the crisis from 5 to 6 on the nuclear crisis scale.

I thought this crisis had already been rated a 6.

At any rate they need to entomb those reactors in concrete ASAP.

“There have been various reports that Japan is considering upgrading the crisis from 5 to 6 on the nuclear crisis scale. “

Only one more point to go after that - to full disaster.

Anyone pooh poohing any detrimental radiation to our shores - How many days/weeks of even low level radiation accumulation on a 24 hour per basis before someone says WTF?

We hear about- ‘no more that a dental xray, etc...but would you want to have that dental xray 24 hrs a day, day in and day out? What does it accumulate too? Which KINDS of radiation are escaping?

BTW, Chernobyl evacuated a 19 mile radius the 2nd day.

Why is here no hint or demand to cap these things? Stop fiddling around trying to save their precious plants - over the safety of people.

They still don’t know where the water came from, and they don’t think the water from the reactor itself could have gotten to where they think the workers were; other speculation is that this was contaminated by the spent fuel pool.

Still adds complexity, because they have to collect this water (which from one source has 3.9 million of some measurement I didn’t recognize, compared to 3.1 in the seawater — a million times more). They have to filter it, clean out the radiation, and then handle the radioactive waste. They obviously can’t let open pools of highly contaminated water sit around.
