As the curtain rises on the 2012 presidential campaign two giants hover over the Republican field--objects of admiration, derision and fear depending on your point of view. Inured to criticism, incapable of self reflection, bearing baggage that is truly world class, Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich have important roles to play if we hope to be spared a second term of Barack Obama.
Their assignment is to draw the pus out of the Republican Party. It's an honorable job, and somebody has to do it.
Hillary Clinton played a similar role for the Democrats four years ago. Bearing the brunt of attacks from the vast right-wing conspiracy still suffering from Clinton derangement syndrome, she was poorly defended by a Democratic base thoroughly divided on her candidacy. This opened the door for an unknown but charismatic senator who became a tabula rasa for a frightened and disaffected electorate. Without Hillary's prima donna performance as the greater-of-two-evils spear catcher, Obama's flaws might have gotten enough scrutiny to trip him up on his way to the coronation.
And so it falls to Sarah and Newt to absorb the full fury of the liberal press, pundits and billionaire-fronted advocacy groups. Hopefully these two sacrificial candidates will take punches and hog headlines to the bitter end before handing the baton to an unscarred nominee that is actually electable.
Of course, finding one amongst the sorry pack of wannabes is going to be no mean feat.

Ah, the kingmaker thing again. The problem with that is you need q plausible candidate for king.
A Republican can’t win in 2012? Have you seen the numbers of Independents that Don’t support this “Kinetic Military Action”??? 68% “The Won” better get Hillary’s War wrapped up in short order.
You are begging, BEGGING for a zot, aren't you?
Where were you in November? Tea Party candidates TROUNCED many of the GOP elite candidates. But since Palin is associated with and supports the Tea Party movement, you cannot abide it.
Palin maybe, but Newt? Why?
Spare us.
Any educated person who has taken the challenge of finding and pondering basic points in geography, paleontology, history, and logic, and then doesn't perceive that the whole we-control-the-climate premise is socialist fantasizing based in profoundly naive, essentially primitive ignorance, needs to rethink it in the context of time. Do the math.
Clamping iron control on the world's energy production and use in the sincere belief that it is somehow "saving the planet" is, to be polite, "quaint."
To be blunt, it's dangerously absurd. Worst of all, it preys on ignorance, and uses ignorance to foment fear, the same as stone-age peoples feared eclipses of the moon, only in reverse.
Gingrich buys it, apparently sincerely.
Give him the heave-ho.
You said it, Brother or Sister FReeper.

And vice-versa.
