Rockets explode near Ashdod, can be heard in Yavneh; at least five mortars and two Qassams strike western Negev; attacks come after day of IAF strikes on militant targets in Gaza.

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired two Grad rockets at southern Israel on Thursday, as cross-border tensions continued to escalate.

Tne of the rockets struck south of of Ashdod and the other just north of the city. It was not exactly clear where the second rocket hit, but the explosion could be heard in Yavneh, some 25 kilometers from Tel Aviv.

A Grad rocket hit Ashdod and another two struck Be'er Sheva on Wednesday, as well, prompting the Israel Air Force to launch a series of attacks against militant groups and smuggling tunnels in the Gaza Strip.

I can remember a time when such shenanigans would not occur because there was a stong belief that the US had a president that would stick up for its traditional allies.

According to wikipedia the Iron Dome project Israel was working on is supposed to start getting operational in early 2011; if this is correct, this does not bode well.

I don’t think the Israelis want to risk having their system fail in front of the world. Imagine what would happen if Israel tried to shoot down a rocket and missed?

They will make certain that they won’t miss before using it. What should worry the opposition is what a counterstrike would look like.

Why is it limited to 40K range? It appears 40K all weather and 70K, otherwise. Just wondering.
