which would have invariably gotten the driver killed, the story would have been changed to make the driver the assailant and the rioting mob to be innocent bystanders, and the family of the driver would soon be looking at a civil suit.

North Carolina is a shall issue state, isn’t it? It's wiser to use your cell phone. Namely, if you get into an accident at a bad location, call 911 to report the accident and accident location and KEEP DRIVING. Tell police you are afraid for your safety and will meet up with them at a safe location (like the police station).
