In a primary election you do not try to "win over" the independents. You try to win over the base.

In my opinion the GOP primary electorate is significantly more "moderate" than is Free Republic.

My evidence is simple: by the time my primary came around in 2008, the surviving candidates were: Mitt Romney, John McCain, and Mike Huckabee.

FR can zot all the RINOs and "Mittbots" but that does not take them off the voting rolls.

So I do believe that Palin (if she runs) will try to appeal to that segment of the GOP electorate.

Your example shows. Mitt was running as a conservative, huck was running as more conservative than Mitt, McCain was running as a strong military conservative. Not one of them was running as a moderate nor where they trying to win the moderate vote in the primary.....

They tailored their campaigns for the states they were in. In SC McCain was for the freaking Confederate flag.

they was no campaign to go after the moderate voter in the primary..
