The radionuclides of most concern include cesium 137 – which has been detected around the Fukushima Daiichi plant – as well as strontium 90

Iodine and cesium are commonly found in healthy nuclear plants with minor fuel failures. They are volatile and semi-volatile fission products that routinely leak into the coolant during any kind of cool down of the fuel. I would expect both to be present when any coolant is vented to the atmosphere

However, I have not heard of any reports of strontium, cerium or radium detection. These would be an indicator of a large fuel failure (such as in the case of melting). Their absence does not negate the possibility of melting, but it is interesting that it has not been found.

There is an interesting documentation called “life in the death zone” (It´s about animals which live close to tschernobyl).
Not that i as human would want to live there (but i´m still missing the 2 headed animals ;-)

This story is indicative of the perverted concept of morality and prioritization within our society. Thousands die from a quake and tsunami and their lives are meaningless, their stories untold. Meanwhile the media and babble heads worry about the spotted owl, some fish that is more important than food or jobs in S. California, or a nuclear incident that is in the grand scheme of things “insignificant” once one takes out all the hype. Near half of all TB in this country is because of an out of control Southern border and that is never in the media, but the BP oil spill (another massive eco story that took the headlines for months and in the grand scheme was insignificant) caused a shift in policies, the allocation of resources to combat this make belief “crisis” where the president himself make constant speeches etc.

Those talking about this nuclear crisis or running around wanting to close all our plants etc should have a big tattoo put on their forehead, “Imbecile.”

If you google Chernobyl all you get is the typical Wikipedia trash and the doomsday stories. However, there is an interesting document floating out there somewhere which was an actual scientific look into the aftermath of this incident from a 20 year retrospective (2006). Interestingly, besides the lack of two headed animals and one eyed fish, the deaths from cancer, the birth defects......... didn't happen. The “hundreds of thousands” that would die from cancer as predicted was all garbage. Likewise, even those exposed to higher radiation levels, the people that worked at the plants itself had roughly 32 die from actual exposure and roughly another 18 that could be attributed to exposure because of a statistically higher rate of death do to certain diseases and issues associated with this exposure long term. Think about that? 50 vs. “hundreds of thousands” I'm not minimizing the death of 50 people, but my goodness, the overexageration, speculation, assumptions........ and especially when it comes to these eco disasters that usually have a greater socioeconomic ideology have no semblance of rationale anymore. Think “Global Warming.”

I couldn’t agree more.
