Man Found Guilty In UNCC Student’s Murder

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- A jury found Mark Carver guilty of first-degree murder in the 2008 killing of a local college student.

Carver was convicted in the death of 20-year-old Ira Yarmolenko, a UNC Charlotte student who was found dead near the banks of the Catawba River. Investigators said she was strangled.

He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Jurors began deliberating at about 1:30 p.m. Friday after hearing closing arguments. They reached a verdict shortly before noon on Monday.

Carver’s trial began last Monday. He has said he is innocent. Forensic experts testified that his DNA was found on Yarmolenko's car but not on the drawstring, ribbon and bungee cord used to strangle her.

Yarmolenko's brother, Pavel, thanked the jury after the verdict was announced.

Carver’s cousin, Neal Cassada, was also charged in the case. Cassada's trial came up first, but he suffered a heart attack and died on the eve of his trial. An autopsy showed he died of complications from heart disease.

I'm glad this chapter is over. He may yet appeal, but for now I'm going to be happy about this. I still miss Ira though.

Did they ever figure out how she got from Charlotte to the Catawba River?

There seems to be a consensus that she drove there herself to take pictures. I don't even think the defense disagreed with that.

Yes. She was over there working on her photography project. They think she made a picture that the perps thought would get them in trouble so they killed her. Both of these guys were on psycho trophic medications. ie they are mentally unbalanced and let their paranoia over react.

Sex had nothing to do with this apparently.

Indeed she was. And incredibly generous and sweet. I am very fortunate to have known her.

I can’t for the life of me figure out why the death penalty isn’t handed out in cases like this.

Now we get to warehouse this oxygen thief for the next forty years.

I am so sorry about your friend. She was truly a beautiful girl. Prayers for her soul and the family and friends who loved her. I cannot imagine even for a second what her family must be going through during this whole ordeal.

Sad. NC is becoming a toilet due to liberalism.

He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Meanwhile, several Liberal organizations, whose sole purpose is to make sure these murders walk free and unharmed amoung us, have set to work tirelessly to open the prison doors to set him free.

That’s the problem. If I were a pretty girl (LOL) I’d paste on a couple of big phony, oozy looking zits every morning and walk around all day drooling through my old nasty looking false yellow teeth all day.

Did they ever figure out who the 3rd person’s DNA was?

How did that third person’s DNA stay on her body/murder weapons but the accuseds’ DNA did not, even if she was submerged in the river as the prosecution contends?

There’s something fishy about this case.

I’m sorry about your friend but something doesn’t add up.

I can’t for the life of me figure out why the death penalty isn’t handed out in cases like this.

Nor I. Several years ago I was in a jury pool for a Charlotte murder case and no death penalty was sought. The circumstances were even more heinous than this one. Two girls were robbed, kidnapped, raped and murdered. The defendant was convicted and got life.

See my post #15. If the death penalty is imposed instead of life without parole there is no chance he will be allowed back into society.

Actually I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the problem. As far as I know there was no sexual assault so this didn’t seem to be about frustrated desire.
