Palin Damned by LOST Letter? [Vanity]
Office of Governor of Alaska [archived at globalsolutions.org] ^ | September 13, 2007 | Gov. Sarah Palin

Posted on 03/21/2011 7:30:57 AM PDT by backwoods-engineer

Palin supporters on FR been getting hit by anti-Palin FReepers (including EternalVigilance and the late-zotted pissant) over a letter Palin wrote to AK's Senators supporting the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST), specifically adjudication over mineral rights. The PDSer's claim this letter is irrefutable proof that Palin wants to destroy US sovereignty.

It looks to me like Palin, as usual for that period, was more interested in mineral rights and what was good for Alaska than subverting US sovereignty, as the PDSer's claim. Here is an analysis of the letter that seems to support what I'm thinking: http://opiniojuris.org/2008/10/09/sarah-palin%E2%80%99s-letter-in-support-of-the-law-of-the-sea-convention/

Palin wrote in the letter: "...as you know, ratification has been thwarted by a small group of senators concerned about the perceived loss of U.S. sovereignty. I believe quite the contrary is the case. If the U.S. does not ratify the convention, we will be denied access to the forum established by the international community to adjudicate claims to submerged lands in the Arctic."

2008 Republican Party Platform

At the United Nations, our country will pay a fair, but not disproportionate, share of dues, but we will never support a UN-imposed tax. . . .

For several reasons, particularly our concern for US sovereignty and America’s long-term energy needs, we have deep reservations about the regulatory, legal, and tax regimes inherent in the Law of the Sea Treaty.

We oppose all attempts by the United Nations to impose a global tax and reject any claims of authority by United Nations to do so.

1996 Republican Party Platform

Republicans will not subordinate United States sovereignty to any international authority. We oppose the commitment of American troops to U.N. “peacekeeping” operations under foreign commanders and will never compel American servicemen to wear foreign uniforms or insignia. We will insist on an end to waste, mismanagement, and fraud at the United Nations. We will ensure American interests are pursued and defended at the United Nations, will not tolerate any international taxation by the organization, nor will we permit any international court to seize, try, or punish American citizens. Before his departure from the Senate, Bob Dole introduced legislation prohibiting U.S. payments to the United Nations and any of its agencies if they attempt to implement global taxes. We support the passage of the Prohibition on United Nations Taxation Act of 1996 to preserve America’s sovereignty and the American taxpayer’s right to taxation with representation.

International Organizations

Americans cannot count on the international organizations to guarantee our security or adequately protect our interests. The United States hosts the headquarters of the United Nations, pays a fourth of its budget, and is proportionally the largest contributor to most international organizations; but many members consistently vote against us. As Soviet influence in these organizations has grown, cynicism and the double standard have become their way of life.

This is why President Reagan announced that we will leave the worst of these organizations, UNESCO. He has put the U.N. on notice that the U.S. will strongly oppose the use of the U.N. to foster anti-semitism, Soviet espionage, and hostility to the United States. The President decisively rejected the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea and embarked instead on a dynamic national oceans policy, animated by our traditional commitment to freedom of the seas. That pattern will be followed with regard to U.N. meddling in Antarctica and outer space. Enthusiastically endorsing those steps, we will apply the same standards to all international organizations. We will monitor their votes and activities, and particularly the votes of member states which receive U.S. aid. Americans will no longer silently suffer the hypocrisy of many of these organizations.

The security of energy and raw materials access

The security of America’s foreign sources of energy and raw material supply can no longer be ignored. The United States imports 50 percent of it domestic petroleum requirements, and depends upon foreign sources for 22 of the 74 non-fuel raw materials essential to a modern industrial economy, Nine of the most critical raw materials are almost entirely (i.e., more than 90 percent) located abroad. In contrast, the Soviet Union imports only two critical minerals at a level in excess of 50 percent of domestic consumption.

Reducing reliance on uncertain foreign sources and assuring access to foreign energy and raw materials require the harmonization of economic policy with our defense and foreign policy. Domestic economic and regulatory policy must be adjusted to remove impediments to greater development of our own energy and raw materials resources. Democratic policies for federal land management, taxation, monetary policy, and economic regulation have served to increase America’s dependence on foreign sources of energy and raw materials. Republicans pledge to work to eliminate domestic disincentives to the exploitation of these resources.

Multilateral negotiations have thus far insufficiently focused attention on U.S. long-term security requirements. A pertinent example of this phenomenon is the Law of the Sea Conference, where negotiations have served to inhibit U.S. exploration of the sea-bed for its abundant mineral resources. Too much concern has been lavished on nations unable to carry out sea-bed mining, with insufficient attention paid to gaining early American access to it. A Republican Administration will conduct multilateral negotiations in a manner that reflects America’s abilities and long-term interest in access to raw material and energy resources.

Resource access will assume an important place in defense and economic planning under a Republican Administration. Since America’s allies are, in most cases, more dependent than the U.S. on foreign sources of energy and raw materials, they too have a vital interest in the defense of their access to these critical resources. Republicans pledge to promote allied defense cooperation to assure protection from military threats to overseas resources.

... The last I heard the democrats were trying to break pieces of this treaty off, add them onto bills they were passing.

In otherwards, they get the same result without putting the treaty back on the table.

That modus operandi seems to have become SOP. I'm surprised that they didn't sneak them into the 'Healthcare Reform' bill.

I agree, and there was never any doubt about any of that. Palin says exactly the same, practically every time she speaks, and certainly said in the India Today Conclave where she spoke on Saturday.

Do not be surprised if some of it is in there. I still don’t think we know the extent of it yet.

Well, the guy thinks he's too clever by half, and smarmily tries to associate Gov Palin with some Marxist washup who started the LOST treaty, then posts books about it in my thread that he had posted elsewhere on FR already today (a link would have been fine).

Ah, well. Forget the LOST treaty; this thread is a 'lost' cause. If supposed "convervatives" like EV and pissant attack Palin with this much vigor, how in the world can she run against the Soros-owned media? And all the while, his candidates garner 0.00001% of the vote, or whatever.

I'm tired. Gonna take a break from the thread.

Gosh. You’ll make it say whatever you want it to say, won’t you.

But history shows us what Reagan’s response was: He killed LOST.

At least for as long as took the Bush family and their supporters to revive it.

Conservatives could hardly believe it.

EV has been around for a long time and wasn’t just outed as you claim. There are some posters that you just ignore and pay no attention to them unless you want to be in piss fights. EV is strong in his beliefs and isn’t going to change but by the same token he’s not going to change a lot of peoples beliefs either, imo. So you can become upset and bothered or you can ignore, take your pick.

Compete? Heck, she and Soros share foreign policy advisers.

But, anyhow, thanks for the admission that you LOST on this critically important issue.

See ya.

This is how matters are resolved. Not thru shouting down anyone and everyone who dares to merely ask a question, or proffer doubt, about Mrs Palin or a position she's taken on any particular issue.

And kudos to Al B for again being one of, if not the, most rational of Palin supporters here at FR.

OMG. That is vile and disgusting! I suppose, wherever he ends up, pissant will be claiming that he was zotted from FR for posting against Sarah Palin. Not true. I’m glad the admin mod who zotted him left that post as his “FR legacy” so that people can see for themselves why he was really banned. Had he posted that same thing about Michele Bachmann he would have gotten the zot just the same.

It was the same with bobj. He finally got the zot for posting something about the righthaven lawsuit that JR found objectionable. Had nothing to do with bobj’s dislike of Sarah Palin, though he’d probably claim otherwise if asked.

These guys share one thing in common. They were both allowed free rein to post anti-Palin threads and comments all day every day for months. Then they both got zotted for something totally unrelated to Palin, all claims to the contrary.

Yeah, but the really important question is this: Duncan Hunter and Alan Keyes in a steel cage death match. Who wins?

Isn't the more relevant question: who cares?

Nothing against either man, of course (I say this as a 1996 and 2000 voter for Alan Keyes), but neither has proven that they have any ability to carry a message to anyone but the "true believers".

Next time you post that smarmy Talking Points Memo article about Scheunemann (and you’ve done it twice now), I am going to call you a “Trig Truther.” Because, hey, everyone knows that Talking Points Memo is THE PLACE for the latest rumors on Trig Palin’s origin, and the sauce is just as good for the goose as it is the gander. If you want to try to impugn Sarah Palin by association, then I’ll call you a Trig Truther. How does that feel, Big Tom?

Do whatever you want.

But the facts remain unchanged. Palin employs as her foreign policy adviser a man who has been on Soros’ payroll for years.

I never mentioned either of them.

Those who can’t deal with facts like to trot them out when they can’t deal with the matters that are actually at hand. It’s a simple diversion, that’s all.
