Politics seems to have become a sort of mental illness. We have no bloody business in Libya, and no idea what we hope to achieve there.
We are daily told that we have no money to spare. We have just scrapped a large part of our Navy.
Our Army is stuck in an Afghan war whose point nobody can explain. And now we have set out on a course that could drag us into a long, gory brawl in North Africa.
And yet, when the Prime Minister announces this folly he is praised. Why? Partly it is because we all watch too much TV. Its reports simplify, then exaggerate.
Reporters, much like politicians, like to feel they are helping to make history, and get excited by subjects they knew nothing about until last Wednesday.
Before we know where we are, we are taking sides in quarrels we dont understand. Who are the Libyan rebels? What do they want? Why do we love them so?
Ive no idea, and nor has Mr Cameron, as we discovered when he (yes, it was him, not poor William Hague) sent the SAS to see them and they were welcomed with pitchforks and mockery.
The only sensible policy in Libya is to wait and see who wins, and then make friends with them. If you think this heartless, you are of course right. Foreign policy is heartless. Nice countries end up being conquered or going bankrupt. But it may be no more heartless than our kindly interference.
I pray that this episode ends quickly and cleanly. Perhaps it will. But we cannot know. What if our humanitarian bombs and missiles accidentally kill women and children (which is almost certain)? What if air attacks and distant shelling fail to stop Gaddafis forces?

Lady, you can back one side. Your own side. See post#1
Post #1 is blank. I do back my own side. No support of the Muslim Brotherhood.
My bad. See post # 2
Only a very small percentage of Germans were Nazis (and only a small percentage of the Nazi Army were SS)... but it was still necessary to bomb (and firebomb) vast swaths of the country, including populations centers, to get the Nazis to stop acting like animals.
How is this any different? Like the Nazis, if the terrorist stripe of Muslims is allowed to continue their evil, homicidal, and oppressive ways, then the entire nation (as well as many others) is in grave risk of immediate harm, including death, torture, subjugation, rape, and butchery. I, for one, will not blink if we reduce Mecca and Tehran to cinders, raze every US mosque to the ground, and literally post military units at every oil head (literally taking the oil), at the next terrorist attack.
The nature and primary goal of war means ending the opponent's will to fight. (One need not end their ability to fight, unless they will never lose the will.) This is how the liberal movement has weakened America the most. Our will to fight for most causes, especially Freedom, is frighteningly low. For the terrorist stripe of Muslim, they believe that they get a place in heaven for a suicide attack. They are cheered by millions worldwide when they are successful. Since we cannot change the nature of fundamentalist Islam, we must take away martyrdom by changing the opinion of the common (cheering) Muslims. They must know, to a certainty, that with every attack, the Muslim world is going to suffer unconscionably. (And for a culture accustomed to having virtually nothing beyond personal relationships, this will take some rough tactics.) When a would-be bomber announces to his loved ones that he will kill himself to help harm the Great Satan, his family must have the desperate need to talk him out of it. They will fight, and possibly even kill, to prevent him from acting.
When that happens, then the War on Terror(ists) is won.
No need. I provided the poster with recruiting hyper links to the branches of our military.
So, because you feel bad about the Christians in Dhafur, this justifies using military action to support Islamist rebels in Libya?
Does not compute.
I didn’t start the thing about Dhafur. I am just saying that I don’t want to be accused of having a double standard. I hear a lot of broken hearts over Dhafur, but I don’t see anyone ponying up.
Will it work? From reading the posts on this thread, you can see how the individuals on this forum are swooning.
Not "why are we helping a bunch of people that hate our guts and want to destroy and kill us?" Not, "What is our purpose for interveining." Just, "obama had fired missiles, whee, whee.
Meantime, you still have Christians being slaughtered by muslims, and not a peep out of them about this. The muslim pirates are still capturing merchant ships and killing the occupants when it suits their fancy. andagain, they are quite as a mouse in a church house on this subject.
If I'm correct, what influence will they have on the new govt. if Ghadafi is overthrown? There's too many unanswered questions and I have a gut feeling that one day we may regret the loss of this quirky guy......
The trouble with this is that Hillary will like these people and so will Obama. If our enemy is killing our enemy, just leave them alone.
I must disagree respectfully. World War II is what created the myth that controlling air power wins the war. That led to the “great success” we call Rolling Thunder. Furthermore, if anyone claims that Linebacker is proof that airpower wins the war the truth is that the North Vietnamese only signed the treaty then because it was very favorable towards them. Think about it, even in Iraq in 91 and 03 the war was only won after ground troops went in.
Those little cutie pies in the buntings are not the problem. Their parents are the problem. Dont be a hater.
No one said anything about children, or hate, from the Christian side of the issue. This is an issue of walking talking reading and misreading adherents of the Islamic faith. I have witnessed a host of name changing types in the USA jumping on the Islamic bandwagon. I contend the majority are clueless as to what they are joining, it just happens to have a cultural influence and allows them to retain differences that I consider anti American.
The bottom line is this, have you tried to get any you know to openly denounce the religion of Peace, or for that matter denounce the radicals who have taken over Islam. I have yet to see it. Doesn’t mean some haven’t done it, but until there is a wholesale denouncement of what is contained in the Koran vis-a-vis the infidel I will remain skeptical of the whole body. Minus the children under say four years of age.
LOL!!!!!!!
Your double standard slip is showing. Should we bomb China to save the Tibetan monks? Should we bomb Lebanon to save the Jews. Should we bomb Iran to save the Christians and Jews and Hindus?
If you can't see your double standards, then you are willfully blind.
I didn’t read your link, but I have done my service so stick it. The problem I had is, like many people, I don’t like being told that I am worth less than the enemy. I was told not to shoot Iraqis, who where setting up mortars (could have been Iraqi National Guard). It made me wonder why I was driving around like a duck in a shooting gallery. The rules of engagement may have changed since I have been there, but it was enough for me.
We are broke, the rebels are mostly MB and a rag tag group of jihadis, worse things are going on in Yemen/Bahrain, this will lead to us groun d troops, etc.
Have we learned nothing from our mess in Iraq?
FWIW - Of course, anyone who wants to win a war needs to beat the enemy into submission. That will include devastating the entire enemy society with overwhelming force.
Air War. Clinton learned it, G. H. Bush learned it. Why can’t we learn it.
Why of course - this type of crappola only weakens us, makes us more spread out, broke, and hated around the world.
What a joke we have become.
Not only that.
The U.S. Government prosecutes and convicts OUR OWN TROOPS for killing the very F****** people they were sent to kill when they need to fulfill a particular political agenda.
It is in support of those men that I’m calling bull****.
If they are murderers, what we are doing in Libya is murder.
How does shooting cruise missiles spread us out? It is target practice.
Sticking our nose in other peoples business isnt accidental or collateral.
There is a double standard at work.
And Ima calling bull****.
I’m lost, are you calling BS on the double standard, or sticking our nose in other people’s business, or no double standard?
