Howie thread for the week starting with his Sunday Herald column. It's time for the annual (formerly Billy Bulger) Halitosis Hall shindig, the political breakfast known for kneeslappers like "what's another name for a wandering priest? A Roamin' Catholic. Then there was the time Gov Weld sang to Billy about a "winning ticket in the lottery/You're gonna be a millionaire, there is no doubt/ For I had YER BROTHER (Whitey) pick these numbers out"
LOL!
Never mind the LOLs. Send me the reward money.
Well I think we’d need more proof that you have captured whitey - just seeing him in aisle 7 isn’t going to cut it!
Stealth hackerama: Just how big is it?

And so farewell, Philip F. Laverriere Sr., out of his $145,000 anti-poverty hack job at the age of 85 after the Lawrence newspaper caught him lounging away his afternoons at the local Elks Club, playing video poker and smoking cigars.
The Eagle Tribune said the Navy veteran of World War II told them hed been spending his afternoons at the Elks for three years.
Thats a lie, I never said that, Laverriere was saying this week. I was probably going to the Elks in the afternoons for only a month.
Laverrieres agency the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council controls $30 million annually in federal and state anti-poverty funds.
Hows that war on poverty working out in Lawrence?
His office was on the same floor as Rep. Nikki Tsongas. Apparently she never noticed anything amiss.
Somebody dropped a dime to the paper, as well as to Tsongas and some other pols.
Guess who followed up.
This is devastating, Laverriere was saying. I have no recourse to anything theyre saying about me. My wife wants to sell our house and move out of this town, but Ive lived here all my life. I feel terrible for my daughter. Shes worked at that paper for 26 years its tough for her now.
You can almost feel sorry for the guy, busted in the twilight of a lucrative lifetime in the hackerama. But the larger question here is, how many people like Phil Laverriere are out there feeding at the trough, serenely gliding under the radar screen? I mean, hes been the executive director since April 1, 1974. Appropriate, eh?
Had you ever heard of the GLCAC? Did you know how much dough they controlled, for such pressing issues as immigration assistance and child care and other things that Americans used to take care of themselves, without going on the dole?
I dont know what Im going to do for health insurance now, Laverriere said. I got five weeks vacation coming.
I asked him about sick days. I was thinking of Tom Kinton, the greed-crazed Massport hack whos walking out the door with a $200,000 pension and another $459,000 in what are described as unused sick days, not to mention his life insurance.
I have 1,825 hours of sick time, but I cant cash them in.
Bummer. Tom Kinton, Im sure, feels your pain.
Meanwhile, the board has appointed a new interim boss of GLCAC, a guy named Chick. Hes a veritable kid only 73.
Something tells me theres a lot of Philip Laverrieres out there. We just havent heard about them yet.
And this morning theyre all thinking to themselves, There but for the grace of God...
