BENGHAZI, Libya -- A plane has been shot down over the main rebel-held city in eastern Libya.
An Associated Press reporter saw the plane go down in flames outside Benghazi early Saturday after the area came under shelling.
A black cloud went up over the city's southern outskirts.
Muammar Qaddafi's government declared a cease-fire Friday in an attempt to outmaneuver Western military intervention. But the opposition has been saying shells rained down well after the announcement and accused the Libyan leader of lying.

Thanks tsowellfan.
IFF = “identification friend or foe”. Usually it’s meant to refer to electronic systems which handle this chore, but I meant it in a more general sense - gonna be hard to tell who’s who, they’re all a bunch of crazies yelling Allah Ackbar and firing wildly in all directions.
maybe MIG-27, too, too much flame and too far away
true true,hehehehhe
One source says that the MIG-27 rarely saw service outside of Soviet Russia, so, basedon that statement, MIG-23 is most likely the safest bet
[This could turn into a horror show]
And real confusing for any outside military force walking into this mess and trying to figure it out.
Perhaps even more confusing for the rebels trying to distinguish Gadaffi planes from our own (and under a stressful panic as the planes get closer)
And didn't the rebels also have or got their hands on some aircraft? Thought I heard that about a week and a half ago.
More clap trap from the media, just because a plane goes down, if it did, does not mean it was shot down.
Europe is in this because of the huge Libyan oil reserve/production. It has a highly desired light crude...
may the ones pushing this crap be in the shopping center when the first vest explosion takes place.
Video of it here.
I completely agree. There seems to be no strategic planning to this one at all. We`re just going to go and shoot at stuff for a little while.... well, I suppose it`ll make us feel good about ourselves again. It`ll be interesting to see Colonel-General Obama`s tactics for switching to Plan B (ground troops) if Plan A fails to halt Gaddafi`s army in its tracks.
And proponents... Obama doesn`t the option of assassinating a foreign head of state... so capping Gaddafi is off the table.
I`m amazed this plan isn`t even being put to a vote test in Congress. At least Bush did that prior to OIF.
Before this is over the media will have peregrine obama greater than Alexander..Caesar..Hannibal..William the Conqueror ..Attila..Frederick.Henry V..Napoleon..Stonewall Jackson..Lee..Washington..MacArthur ..Patton..
Yes, a plane did go down sometime somewhere, that is for sure. Now would you like to see the fake drivers license I made with my computer and printer one day when I was bored. Look just like the real one.
now being reported it was a rebel aircraft shot down by daffy forces
doesn’t history show it has always been rats that get us into wars on foreign soil?
“Who are the rebels?”
Now stop talking about that elephant in the room!! Colonel-General Baraq “The Won” al-Ubama can`t have his magical moment if we keep peppering him with silly, annoying questions about strategy and objectives!
There`s a war on, dontcha know!!
“No blood for oil”
Yep.. interesting how that, along with “Dissent is Patriotic” suddenly went out of vogue in January 2009.
Until recent history, yes.
I read that too but it never got into the MSM. There's an airport in Benghazi that may also have had some Libyan military planes but I'm guessing. Benghzi’s a port so it may have naval craft. I know when the revolt started there were pockets of pro-Qaadafi security people in Benghzi fighting off the rebels with antiaircraft guns. Egypt is supposedly smuggling weapons into the rebels. They may have supplied them with Stingers or something more sophisticated than SA-14’s or whatever they've been using out in the desert without much luck.
