The End of a Green Dreem (LACCD pulls plug on green energy guru)
Campus Technology ^ | 17 March 2011 | Andrew Barbour

Posted on 03/18/2011 8:07:27 PM PDT by Steely Tom

It sounded too good to be true -- and it was. An ambitious plan to make Los Angeles Community College District a national leader in green technology and renewable energy appears to be in shambles ...

(skip)

... Given the high level of publicity that LACCD received for its green initiatives, there is a danger that these revelations will damage the credibility of other green projects on campuses nationwide. It is important to note that the problems besetting LACCD went far beyond the district's green initiatives. The LA Times articles exposed issues at every level of governance from the trustees down, and involved all types of construction ranging from a crooked clock tower to heating units installed upside down. Indeed, in April 2009, Eisenberg wrote an e-mail to his construction chief noting that, "Our new buildings are fundamentally flawed.... We cannot control lighting systems, HVAC systems, security systems, building management systems, etc."

A minor, but interesting aside: when one Googles these words from the article:
"District a national leader in green technology and renewable energy appears "

... you get two hits. One is on the article from Campus Technology. The other is from something called green-energy-central.com. According to Google, that character string appeared at that site on 16 March 2011 at 0701 GMT, which would have been 12:01 AM, one minute after midnight, 16 March. The interesting thing is that the story has been scrubbed from the the green-energy-central website, and even Google's cached image of the page has been scrubbed, although Google includes this helpful note at the top of the cached version:

This is Google's cache of http://green-energy-central.com/. It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on Mar 16, 2011 07:01:27 GMT. The current page could have changed in the meantime. Learn more Text-only version

These terms only appear in links pointing to this page: district a national leader in green technology and renewable energy appears

Eisenberg estimated that it would cost $975 million to take all nine campuses off the grid. An engineering consultant believed the final bill would be much higher — $1.9 billion. As a point of reference, LACCD spent less than $8 million on power bills in 2010.

This paragraph says it all. These Greenies will not be deterred in their quest by little things like facts or reason. Strange that it took the LA Times to get some accountability here.

$8 million on power bills in 2010.

Do you have a reference for that? Sounds extremely low to me.

Gee, who saw this coming?
Guaranteed, the contractors were hired based strictly on their minority ownership.

In other words, once again reality has jumped up and bitch-slapped the liberals, just like they deserve.
And once again, the taxpayers get the bill.

That was quoted in the LATimes article too. Ask them.

For 8 million dollars, you can buy a complete gas-fired power plant and fuel it for a year. I'm betting that the LA community college doesn't use 1.2 gigawatt hours of 'lectrikity in a year. Because at $0.15USD/kilowatt hour, that's how much 'lectrikity you are talking about. I can get it here in Texas for $0.08-$0.12USD/kilowatt hour.

Not only would the nine colleges sever ties to the grid, saving millions of dollars a year, they would make money by selling surplus power.

I know it is nitpicking, but you can't sell surplus power to the power company when your system has "severed ties to the grid".

I think this demonstrates in a basic way the lack of understanding these green advocates at all levels of institutions have with regard to energy issues.
