Vietnamese Navy Receives First Stealth Frigate
Posted by M Pyadushkin at 3/18/2011 8:47 AM CDT
On March 5 the Vietnamese Navy officially took into service the first Gepard class frigate. The ship named after the first Vietnamese emperor Dinh Tien Hoang is built in Russia by Zelenodolsk shipbuilding plant under the contract for two ships of the class inked in December 2010. The second frigate built for Vietnam has been in sea trials since August 2010.

Vietnam became the first foreign customer for the Gepard class (Russian project Gepard 3.9), an export version of Russian project 11611 frigates. These frigates are designed for maritime patrol and border control operations. The Russian Navy has operated the launch ship of this project Tatarstan in the Caspian fleet since 2003. In 2011 they are expected to get one more frigate Dagestan that is reportedly being built under an improved 11661K project. Zelenodolsk plant is reportedly assembling one more ship for the Russian Navy, but its major efforts have been focused at implementation of the Vietnamese contract so far.

The Gepard class ships have a stealth-shaped hull with a full displacement of about 2,100 tons and their cruising endurance is 5000 nautical miles. These frigates are armed with Kh-35E anti-ship missiles, the Osa-M air defense missile system, 76.3 mm and 30mm artillery guns, 533-mm torpedoes and antisubmarine mortars. Zelenodolsk plant reported that the Vietnamese ships received more fuel-efficient diesel engine instead of the gas turbine powerplant of the 1661 project frigates. Due to some improvements with the diesel, its speed grew to 21 knots (compared with the design of 18 knots).
Did John McCain arrange for US taxpayers to pay for it?
The Russians and Soviets especially have always made beautiful ships.
And extremely safe and reliable ones too.
18 kts on the diesel sounds right. But only 28 for a 2000ton ship with 58,000? Those are tonnage/power figures for a pre WW2 destroyer (mid 30s).
I would suspect only one 29,000 gas turbine for 28 kts.
If they replace it with a second diesel for 16000hp total, low 20s is about right.
Vietnam had been at war with 3 of the 5 big military powers of the world. France, US and China. If any country in the world knows what it means to fight big powers, its Vietnam.
The last time they “concocted” a tactic they beat a couple of superpowers.
What you get when democrats run anything even a war..
Democrats are simply not dealing with a full deck..
AND republicans let them get away with it..
Vietnam was lost under Nixon’s watch. Fall of Saigon happened under Ford. It would have made little difference on the outcome of the war whether republicans or democrats were running it. My point is whatever Vietnam’s strategy was, it worked.
Vietnam had no strategy... nor does/did the North Koreans.. ALL strategy in that area comes from China..
The useful idiots have become the Muslims.. World socialism has no problem with liquidating a few billion muslims.. or anybody else..
World socialism, Chinese Socialism, Muslims? Russia and China unified? I don't know what you are even talking about.
duuugh.. "Progressives" are all on the same team..
Welcome to earth.. What planet are you from?..
Whatever man. I still have no idea what you are talking about and what any of it has to do with.
