The U.S. Navy has positioned a sizeable fleet off both the west and east coasts of Japan to aid in the relief efforts...the service had 14 ships and more than 10,000 personnel in Japan or off the Japanese coast. Military officials expect a total of 15 U.S. ships in the region.

“...we will soon have almost 70 helicopters in the region or in the area that was affected,” he said. “We’re moving Japanese first responders, Japanese troops by ship to the affected areas.”

Thank you!! Let's focus on human beings in need instead of nuclear fears.

Onagawa is one of the many small towns sitting along the deeply indented, sawtooth shore that lines the coast of northern Miyagi prefecture. The jagged coastline has made the region ideal for oyster and salmon farming. The estuaries that make for rich sea life also allowed powerful waves to build. Seawalls built to keep out high waves also kept tsunami waters from washing back out to sea quickly, leaving whole sections of towns submerged and inaccessible.

Firefighters from across Japan are splitting Onagawa into sections to simplify the searches. Many parts of town are largely untouched by rescue crews, standing as testaments to the waves' destructive power. An upside-down car dangled off the edge of a hollowed-out office building. A bicycle twisted among cables and metal scraps.

In a subtle nuance of language to indicate the slim hopes of finding any survivors here, firefighters used the Japanese word for "search" instead of the more commonly used "rescue."

As rescuers across the area break through impassible roads and search untouched piles, the tally of the counted—including those deemed missing—climbs. A day after the big quake, Japan's National Police Agency reported 1,597 dead and 1,481 missing. The next day it was 1,897 dead and 3,002 missing. By Wednesday, the number of dead had risen to 4,314; those declared missing had soared to 8,606.

At this point, it is probably a recovery mission rather than a rescue. The earthquake was a week ago, and they have had freezing weather and snow. It’s very sad...

Did not see anything about the Scots rescue team.

Lessons: need to be 100% SELF SUFFICIENT, help from sister organizations inside, and cooperation of the rescue organization’s nation’s state department.

Disaster in Japan: Scottish rescue team ‘disgusted’ as red tape prevents them from helping search effort

Mar 16 2011

A BRITISH rescue team worker in Japan today said he was “disgusted” at being prevented from travelling to the disaster zone.

Willie McMartin, from the International Rescue Corps, told of his “sheer disbelief” that the British embassy refused to provide a covering letter confirming they were a genuine UK charity.

The document was needed to get a permit from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) so they could draw petrol which has been rationed.
