...In 1996, top-loaders were pretty much the only type of washer around...Consumer Reports tested 18 models, 13 were "excellent" and five were "very good." By 2007, though, not one was excellent and seven out of 21 were "fair" or "poor." ...The culprit is the federal government's obsession with energy efficiency...washer standards demonstrate the harmfulness of the ever-growing body of efficiency mandates.

We have a 12 yr old Maytag top loader.
These are wonderful machines that were refined over decades.
Based on the multitude of problems that my daughters have with their new HE front loaders, I’m going to keep running the old Maytag for as long as parts are made. I’m betting if factory parts go away, the Chinese will be doing knockoff parts long after I’m dead.
For anybody who likes to do their own repairs, here’s a great website:

Exactly. 2.8 gal toilets were outlawed and replaced with 1.6 gal tanks. The only problem is now you have “be nice and flush twice” to get ecerything to go down the drain. That means more often 3.2 gals are being flushed instead of 1.6 more of ten than not. IDIOTS.. LOL
“How about the incandescent bulb?”
I saw one of those on the antiques road show the other day
4th of July sparklers
Thats the one that really pisses me off
Oh good lord all you need is a makita and a drill bit
Just curious, why do people use fabric softener at all?
I have never understood this product (either sheets or liquid fabric softener). To me, it just makes fabric feel kind of slimy, and the cheap perfum-y scent is annoying.
Also I have read that fabric softener sheets shorten the life of temperature/dryness sensors in your dryer.
***And shower heads!***
My husband took our new ones apart and removed the part that reduced the flow.
He broke one figuring out how to do it, but it was well worth it.
Thanks! I thought I was going to have to make a run to Canada and smuggle one back, and I wasn’t sure where I could hide it. ;-)
Yeah, but I'll bet he goes through quarters like mad!
Get a box of TSP (trisodium phosphate) in the paint department of the hardware store. It contains phosphates. I add 1/2 teaspoon of it to Cascade and cleans dishes like there is no tomorrow.
The front loaders take longer to wash each load, but they can run bigger loads still using less water and detergent. Eliminating the agitator means for the same sized basket, more clothes can fit in and there is less wear and tear on the clothes during washing. Front loading allows the washer and dryer to be stackable, so they can have a smaller footprint in the home.
A bit maybe, but both my daughters bought HE front loaders (2 different brands) and are unhappy with both the performance and the reliability.
One daughter even left her beautiful looking HE front loader behind when they sold the house and bought a beat up used Maytag top loader like I told her to for the new house. She's a happy camper now, even if her laundry room doesn't look as stylish.
yup... i’ve done it whenever i can
on a planet where 2/3s of the SURFACE AREA is water, i find it exceedingly hard to believe there is a real shortage of water. especially in coastal regions in the 21st century.
any shortage within 50 miles of the coast is really man-made or neglect/planning-failure
Our state has no laws against phosphates, but my Sam's Club started selling Cascade without phosphates anyway.
After just a couple of weeks, my dishes, pots and flatware started gleaming. You don't realize just how filmy your stuff gets without adequate cleaning. I have a several year supply stashed away in a closet!
How well-rated were the washing capabilities of the Founding Fathers’ wives?
Did you get a front loader? They use a lot less water and energy and get clothes cleaner than a top loader. They are much more expensive, but if you want a new washer, this is the only thing on the market now that works.

I dislike what I do to my toilet.
Go to Craigslist. Find a used old top loader.
Actually ours is a top loader. A GE something or other.
