Children can collect SSI if they are disabled or a dependent of a person who died. Many children collect SSI until they are 18 years of age because a parent passed away, and if they remain in school they can collect until 21 or 22 years of age.

Our son died at age 19. He is on the SSDI. The SSDI is for anyone who had a SS number. Not sure why some don’t show up. My brother also died at age 38 and is on there. Neither one collected SS or SSI.
