the individual who held the number immediately before Obamas, 042-68-4424. The applicant, Thomas Wood, died at age 19, which is why his information is available.
Obama has 042-68-4425
Wood had 042-68-4424
******
Who has the number AFTER Obama at 042-68-4426 or 4427? Are they still living?
Who has the number BEFORE Wood at 042-68-4423 or 4422? Are they still living?
Could someone please breakdown the string of digits above in one social security number and explain what they mean or what they refer to? Thanks.

* The first set of three digits is called the Area Number
* The second set of two digits is called the Group Number
* The final set of four digits is the Serial Number
Since 1972, when SSA began assigning SSNs and issuing cards centrally from Baltimore, the area number assigned has been based on the ZIP code in the mailing address provided on the application. The applicant’s mailing address does not have to be the same place as their residence. Thus, the Area Number does not necessarily represent the State of residence of the applicant, either prior to 1972 or since.”

So, the question now is, “Who in Connecticut applied for Obama’s SSN?”
IIRC in those days the first three numbers identify the location where the card was issued, the second two numbers are the year the SSI number was issued, and the last four were the numbers assigned to you personally. I don’t know if they were issued sequentially, but that would make sense.
