Netanyahu in 1978
American Thinker ^ | 3/16/11 | staff

Posted on 03/16/2011 4:51:24 PM PDT by Nachum

In a remarkable video from 1978, 28 year old MIT grad Benjamin Netanyahu debates whether there should be a Palestinian state created on the West Bank and Gaza. Netanyahu argues that such a state would have but one goal: to destroy the Jewish state of Israel. He reviews the history from 1948 to 1967, when Gaza was controlled by Egypt and the West Bank by Jordan and there were no calls to end the occupation, or for national sovereignty for the Palestinians.

But one thing was similar in that period and today: terror attacks against Israeli Jews. Netanyahu went by the name of Benjamin Nitay at the time. His brother, Yonatan was an Israeli commando who led the Entebbe raid on July 4, 1976 during which he died. Netanyahu chose to use the name Nitay at MIT, where he was one year behind me, in large part for security reasons due to his brother's notoriety and the spate of Palestinian terror attacks aimed at Israelis all over the world.

Thanks for posting.

Ben Nitay?

Benzion Netanyahu’s father, Nathan Mileikowsky, used to sign some of his articles with the name Netanyahu. It was a common practice for Zionist activists at the time to adopt a Hebrew name, and his son Benzion eventually adopted this family name.

Following the same practice, Benzion Netanyahu occasionally wrote under the name “Nitay”. When his son Benjamin Netanyahu lived in the United States, he needed a name Americans could easily pronounce; he chose “Ben Nitay”.

This video has been around for a while (obviously). What was the inspiration for American Thinker to bring it out now?

Bring it out now?

I can think of several reasons, can’t you?

To reinforce the real nature of the attacks on Israel.

To put the Obama administration in context to past administrations.

To remind us of the history and the size of the population of that time.

To give a past to the current leader of Israel- and to remind us that Obama has none...

Great pic! Is that his wife, and if so, what’s the story - was he divorced or widowed?

This has been the case since Netanyahu gave the speech. I do wish more media attention was given to the murders of the family in Itamar. A new anti-Israel film is about to be screened at the UN and the continued acts violence by the palestinian vermin will be ignored.

I believe that there is a need for basic public relations. No one buys the evil of the despots who populate the UN. We are part of the equation. Passing along information.

A nice fable, but like much in Wikipedia, it is false.
If you had read the article in The American Thinker, you would have known that Bibi went by the name Nitay while a student at MIT undergrad & grad because terrorists were targeting Israelis all over the world. His name was well known to them, as his brother had been one of the heroes who lost his life during the raid on Entebbe.

Reference in the article to his brother Yonatan was hot-linked to the Wikipedia entry on him (which led me to the Wikipedia entry on his father, Benzion).

I assume you are referring to the motive for the name change, and not the fact that his father, Benzion, occasionally used the name Nitay as a nom de plume.

We are led to assume that the unnamed author of the article has firsthand knowledge of Bibi’s motive. It would certainly make sense. I found no reference of Bibi ever discussing the name-—only this mention in a book entitled “Reporting: Writings from The New Yorker”:

“In 1973, he shortened his name to Ben Nitay. Netanyahu always denied that he had legally changed his name, and when Ma’ariv published the legal documents recording the name change, filed in a court in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, the Prime Minister’s spokesman, Shai Bazak, called the article “a malicious effort to contrive a sensational story.””

It seems to have been an affectionate name choice, but it apparently caused quite a stir nearly a quarter century after the fact, during Bibi’s first term as Prime Minister.

Looks like the first wide-scale circulation was March 2009. This article mentions the YouTube video “currently circulating”:

Who is Ben Nitay, and why does he look so much like Binyamin Netanyahu?
