Mr Chalabi recounted in the Wall Street Journal how President George H. W. Bush’s 1991 call for a popular uprising against Saddam had been heeded by the Iraqi people, only to have Saddam then murder some 30,000 of them from helicopter gunships while the Western world stood by.....

Did this actually happen to the tune of 30,000 people ? I don't remember hearing that.

I think that’s actually a low estimate.

yes it did. Afte rthe Gulf war Bush chickened out and stopped at the Iraq border. The Iraq army wa sin full flight and Bush called for the Iraqi people to rise up and finish the job. they did and when Saddam brought his airforce into play the people were mowed down. It was one of the main reasons we were not greeted as liberators in 2004 when we finally moved to stop Saddam. The people took months/years to trust us.
