I love that show.
I love to watch Storage Wars. I also wonder about all those other people who seem to never win any of the auctions.
Perhaps they edit them out? It does seem to be about the 4 main characters, who all have second hand shops.
It’s very exciting to watch them “uncover” what they have purchased!
F-4G Wild Weasel
Why is it alright for retailers to buy goods at wholesale prices and sell at a profit? If these poor people want the most the public is willing to pay for their item, they should sell it on Ebay. Pawn shops provide a service for people who have an item of value they are willing to part with and need cash right away.
Two people freely reaching an agreement. What’s to hate? Either can say no and walk away.
The F-4 could carry a maximum of 4 AIM-9 Sidewinders and 4 AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missiles. The AIM-9’s were paired in two under wing pylons and the AIM-7’s were semi-recessed into the belly of the airplane.
The AIM-120 replaced the AIM-7. First AIM-120 birds were issued in September 1991 to F-15 and F-16 fighter units of the USAF and F-14 and FA-18 squadrons of the USN and USMC. Early stocks of AIM-120’s were limited in comparison to AIM-7’s and this makes the issue to an old bird like the F-4 even more unlikely.
Not only that, PS doesn't make any money when they buy the item at a discount. At that point, they have less money than they did before the seller came in. They have no idea how long they will have to hold on to the item before a buyer comes along. Their money could be tied up for years, or they may never find a seller.
It always surprises me when the seller expects top dollar from the PS guys. If the seller wants top dollar, they've got to do the work and find the buyer themselves.
We do, too. Went there the day after Thanksgiving last year. The shop wasn't really that crowded. There was someone at the front door that would only let people in if a certain number left. The only family member there was The Old Man. My husband talked to him for maybe 30 seconds.
I saw on their website that you can give a description of what you want to sell and the day(s) you'll be in Vegas and the producer will contact you if they're interested. I guess that's why they "call in the expert" to appraise your item. The experts probably aren't called in any other time.
An employee told us it was Rick's idea for the show. His wife and mother don't want to be on the show because they want their privacy. The Old Man can't even go gas up his car without being mobbed by fans.
When they're filming, you can still shop but they ask that you not look at the cameras. We'll be going there in a few weeks and I hope we're there while they're filming.
The people they buy from that have collected junk for years and years and the weeds and bushes have grown up around it. Letting the junk stack up in the yard is not antique collecting in my estimation. I really can't figure those people out.
It makes me want to get a bull dozer and create a land fill.
LOL, that’s where he (Austin Russell) got the nickname.
Yeah, he looks and acts like a chumley.
You make excellent points, but wouldn’t you say that an antique dealer to a pawn shop is like the difference between a full-service bank to a payday loan business? If I nad an antique that I’d like to sell and could afford to spend time doing my research and negotiating with an antique dealer, I would. But if I had just lost my shirt at the casino and needed cash FAST, I’d go to a pawn shop.
You've got to go with your guts on something like that. I'm not an expert on everything, and sometimes I've probably let "the deal of the century" go because it was an item I don't know enough about. One thing I've learned is that you don't have to buy everything that comes in the door - every once in a while - I see something that causes a little voice in my head to say - grab it! Rarely - I'll make a killing on it - and that helps make up for the rest.
I get a kick out of the Pickers - I've been to people's places that look like that - heck - my house is pretty bad! What I've found is that usually people like that just want you to see what they've accumulated. Older people are the shrewdest, they know exactly what they've got & what it's worth - they've been around awhile & they're pretty good at the wheelin' and dealin' part of it.
I love them too - I love the patina of years of wear - knowing that someone else loved them for years. I like to imagine the stories that they could tell - the history that they've seen. For the money, they are a better deal than anything new you can buy. If something has lasted a hundred years - there's no reason why it can't last another hundred years!
My husband says he is probably the smartest one on the show!
Unless the "expert" is working with the buyer.
I suppose so, but most dealers want to make the deal as quickly as possible - don't want to give the seller time to back out, or go somewhere else to sell it. Of course - where we're at - we never get people coming in to sell letters with FDR's signature on it - or gold coins from Spanish shipwrecks.
