How can academics, politicians, news media people and ordinary citizens get away with statements such as "Reagan's budget deficits," "Clinton's budget surplus," "Bush's budget deficits and tax cuts" or "Obama's tax increases"?

IMO, these things are said by politicians who are hoping to deflect blame and are echoed by academics and MSM.

Of course, the people saying and echoing these things also believe the government "saves or creates" jobs.

Offer them federal land.
Saw that and thought, hey, that’s a good idea.
Saw the author of the piece, Walter Williams, and thought: of course!

I would be willing, and I suspect many others, to make a deal with Congress whereby I forsake all Social Security and Medicare benefits for, say, 50 acres of land in Alaska.

Damn right.

An excellent article; again, it makes me wonder how many people have actually read the Constitution? It is my opinion that the Founders intented the legislative branch to be dominant. After all, Article I (the legislature) is longer than Articles II (executive) and III (judiciary) combined.

As for that 50 acres of land, remember: probably no roads (maybe no access), no utilities, the nearest police, fire and medical may be a hundred miles or more away, and (at least in Alaska) you would be snowbound all winter. Just a thought.

The federal government has huge quantities of wasting assets -- assets that are not producing anything, 650 million acres of land -- almost 30 percent of the land area of the United States.
I'm thinking of the resources on that 650 million acres of land.
Trees, oil and gas, minerals, just to name a few, all going to waste.
How about tapping into those resources and remove some of the tax debt on Americans.

...50 acres of land in Alaska.
You forgot the mule. Anyway, it'll never happen as the government will never free it's tax slaves.

May I respectfully point out that in prior generations, such as mine, the “students” in the public schools were REALLY educated and taught in economics and classes on how our government worked, exactly what Dr Williams writes.
Today’s STUDENTS(!) are taught to feel good about themselves, love the environment and know nothing about the true workings of government and economics. It is thus rather easy to manipulate a “dumbed down” citizenry.
Can I get a refund?

“Give us a King, like other nations have......”

It’s an old story and always has a bad ending.
