Bloomberg on Hill to Back Gun Law
New York Times ^ | March 15, 2011 | JENNIFER STEINHAUER

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York joined Representative Carolyn McCarthy on Capitol Hill on Tuesday to show support for a bill she will sponsor to try to close loopholes that permit criminals, drug abusers and the mentally ill to bypass the National Instant Criminal Background Check System and purchase guns.

Among other things, the bill would increase penalties for states that do not properly turn over records of people who are already barred by federal law from owning a gun. The bill would also require federal agencies to certify twice a year to the U.S. Attorney General that they have submitted all relevant records to the background-check data base. Senator Charles E. Schumer recently introduced similar legislation in the Senate.

“The vast majority of Americans agree about what should be done,” said Mr. Bloomberg, who as a co-chairman of Mayors Against Illegal Guns has worked aggressively with other big city mayors to close loop holes in gun laws and end the sale of illegal guns.

Among other things...

I bet there is more in there than the NYT describes. Perhaps outright ban on magazines exceeding a certain size? (Want to turn in the ones you already own?)

Well let’s see, a five shot .357 mag will provide a way to acquire a number of other weapons, push come to shove.

I didn’t realize that criminals were allowed to bypass background checks when purchasing a firearm, interesting. NYC??

In Texas, all our criminals always buy at gunshows, drugstores, home and garden centers, usually full-auto weapons, what’s the big deal?

They should outlaw crime and hunger while they’re at it.

Does anyone really honestly believe that this “new law” would have kept
an undiagnosed nut case from shooting Gabrielle Giffords?

I think background checks before one can exercise a basic human right is one of the worst forms of gun control. I wish we could abolish this nonsense.

All gun laws are unconstitutional.

Period, paragraph, end of discussion.

It’s gun haters like Bloomberg and McCarthy in the Government who would not hesitate to let guns “walk” to Mexico to justify tough anti gun laws in the United States.

“...the bill would increase penalties for states that do not properly turn over records of people...”

Properly turn over records!? What in the heck does that mean?

If Bloomburg is supporting it, the bill must be bad for freedom.

"close loopholes that permit criminals, drug abusers and the mentally ill to bypass the National Instant Criminal Background Check System and purchase guns."

Well, that means that Bloomberg and McCarthy cannot purchase guns.

No, what it means is that if you want to buy a gun, you are mentally ill, and therefor prohibited from buying it.

This Bloomberg really loves the limelight, doesn’t he! Not enough to be a multi-zillionaire, he wants to be noticed, too - and by as many folks as possible.

Perhaps some of the mountain of cash would be well spent on a good psychiatrist.

Once again the Communist Party creates BS out of thin air to gain support for a pet project.
