Activists confirm plans to peacefully take Capitol
By Todd A. Heywood | 03.15.11 | 12:47 pm
A group of Michigan activists has confirmed that it plans to stage a protest in the state Capitol building at 4 p.m. today.
Lance Enderle, a former Democratic candidate for Michigans 8th Congressional district, confirmed moments ago that he is leading the protest.
We are planning to exercise our free speech rights in a non-violent way, Enderle said. We will take the Rotunda, and we are not leaving.
The Capitol building closes at 5:30 p.m. and officials have told Michigan Messenger that anyone remaining in the building after 5:30 will be given a 10 minute warning to leave. If they dont leave, Michigan State Police troopers could eject them or arrest them for trespassing. The problem for state police troopers, however, might be in mustering the manpower. In last years budget, Republican lawmakers voted to close the Capitol police post, which has left the state with only two Michigan State Police troopers and the Sergent at Arms staff. It is likely state police will have to muster road patrol staff to help eject protesters.
We shouldnt be surprised that people are extremely upset, said David Holtz, executive director of Progress Michigan. What Republicans are trying to do is a declaration of war on hard-working middle class families. Civil disobedience has deep roots in our democracy. And when democracy is threatened, people will respond.

Do it. Use water cannons. What's the weather forecast?

What complete and utter CRAP!
Those must be two REALLY busy dudes!
Call the local Tea Party chapters and ask for volunteers, then deputize them.
I bet you could get a few hundred guys to clear the building really quick.
National Guard?
I can tell you I’m mad at these thugs and their lying slogans.
But then republicans are too damn stupid to make a national issue out of the democrat threats and illegal behavior. And this after the democrats set themselves up perfectly over the Tucson shooting and their “civility” lies.
Use the old southern trick. Where a crowd gathers pour sugar all over the place before they arrive. The ants that gather will do the rest.
if this is perfectly acceptable...
then i’m sure we can get a few million to show up @ 1600 penn. ave
"You are planning to do what!"

What “working families” are doing is keeping the “looters” from completely destroying them.

David served as environmental media coordinator for 12 Michigan groups, including Sierra Club, Clean Water Action, Michigan Environmental Council and the Michigan League of Conservation Voters.
He is a former newspaper reporter & congressional aide.
I live in Michigan, and I’ve heard a couple times on the radio this afternoon that “1000 elderly people” are going to the protest.
HA! they will all turn around when they find out there are only 12 handicap parking spaces!
which has left the state with only two Michigan State Police troopers and the Sergent at Arms staff
"...has left the state with only two Michigan State Police troopers" -- as in the state as only two state police troopers. Seems those guys would be a tad bit busy handling the whole state.
Nah. Remember how we got Noriega out of the Vatican Embassy back in the day? Do the same thing. Play music REAL *LOUD* in the capitol building.
Except I don't think acid rock or grunge will work — too many protesters will like it. Instead play something classical . . . syrupy classical that even classical music fans cannot stand. Like Pachobel’s Canon.
I wish someone would “peacefully take” Enderle’s car.
oops.. i missed that.
but i still would like to know, how many state cops do we really need? for as many city, township and village cops, as well as county cops, how much work is there really for state troopers?
Union folks sure have a lot of time on their hands..do they ever work?
