I repeat, there was and will *not* be any significant release of radioactivity from the damaged Japanese reactors.
By "significant" I mean a level of radiation of more than what you would receive on - say - a long distance flight, or drinking a glass of beer that comes from certain areas with high levels of natural background radiation.
I have been reading every news release on the incident since the earthquake. There has not been one single report that was accurate and free of errors (and part of that problem is also a weakness in the Japanese crisis communication). By not free of errors I do not refer to tendentious anti-nuclear journalism that is quite normal these days. By not free of errors I mean blatant errors regarding physics and natural law, as well as gross misinterpretation of facts, due to an obvious lack of fundamental and basic understanding of the way nuclear reactors are build and operated. I have read a 3 page report on CNN where every single paragraph contained an error.
We will have to cover some fundamentals, before we get into what is going on.

The end of the world as we know it? I’m having trouble keeping up with all the disaster predictions.
Bet you hit it once, twice. That's how it happens to me.
At least with gas and coal we don’t have to worry about 5000 degree core meltdown and nuclear rods flying through the air with a half life of 10,000 or so years. I’ll take gas and coal thank you very much.
“Well the server youre posting on would go with it...”
Nothing that has happened in Japan would have caused FR’s servers to go down except perhaps a power outage.
Most of any bad stuff released is going to be Iodine which has a half-life of less time than it takes to get yo us...
Don’t worry so much.
Nope. Only hit it once, once. Yes, I’m sure. :-)
I’m going to hang onto your post for a few days and if this thing turns rad you can splain it to all of us again. Meanwhile I need to go take my Kelp capsule. Nighty night ya’ll.
What a juxtaposition on the “latest comments” page:

kyodo news reports hydrogen explosion at reactor 4
News flash: Fukishimo reactor #4 just blew.
Dude, you were talking about California going into the sea... Which is what I was responding to...
“I for one dont give a crap about the communist state of California. Or their wine... If they dropped into the sea it would be sad, but it would be better for the rest of America.”
The FR servers are in California...
F you dimwit!
Yes, you are having trouble keeping up. No argument there.
You stated that I said something I didn’t say.
Goodnight.
I expect that this will still turn out well. If I’m wrong you’ll have plenty of time to rub it in my face.
You too? And here I thought I was alone.
Hydrogen explosion, same deal as all the others. Has not a lick to do with a core meltdown.
Same thing happened to me on another thread, except it triple posted... so embarrasing.
Didn’t I say it would be sad?
