Potassium Iodide Runs Low as Americans Seek It Out (It's over! Dig that hole and pack it up)
wall street journal ^ | 3/14/2011 | JONATHAN D. ROCKOFF

Supplies of potassium iodide, a preventive against radiation poisoning of the thyroid gland, are running low at some manufacturers, as Americans seek protection amid fears that radiation from Japan could head to the U.S., according to the companies.

One leading supplier, Anbex Inc., quickly sold out of its supply of more than 10,000 14-tablet packages on Saturday, said Alan Morris, president of the Williamsburg, Va., company.

He said the closely held firm was getting about three orders a minute for $10 packages of its Iosat pills, up from as few as three a week normally.

"Those who don't get it are crying. They're terrified," said Mr. Morris. The company tells callers that the likelihood of dangerous levels of radiation reaching the U.S. is low, but some callers, particularly on the West Coast, remain afraid, Mr. Morris said.

Interest is also high at Fleming Pharmaceuticals, a St. Louis County company that makes potassium iodide in liquid form. "It actually has been insanity here," said Deborah Fleming Wurdack, a co-owner.

The company hasn't accounted for all the recent orders, but Ms. Wurdack estimates the firm is getting dozens of calls an hour, along with emails, requesting the 45-milliliter ThyroShield bottles, which sell for $13.25 each.

Shelf life is 6-7 years so having them is actually pretty smart, Japan or not.

In reality, they do not lose efficacy over time:

"Yes, potassium iodide tablets are inherently stable and do not lose their effectiveness over time. Manufacturers must label their products with a shelf-life to ensure that consumers purchase safe and useful products.

According to FDA guidance on Shelf-life Extension , studies over many years have confirmed that none of the components of KI tablets, including the active ingredient, has any significant potential for chemical degradation or interaction with other components or with components of the container closure system when stored according to labeled directions. To date, the only observed changes during stability (shelf-life) testing have been the failure of some batches of KI tablets to meet dissolution specifications. Some tablets tested required slightly longer than the specified time to achieve dissolution. Even in the case of a failure of this sort, the product remains usable. In such cases, instructions can be provided to crush the tablets and mix them with a juice or other liquid prior to administration as suggested for emergency pediatric dosing."

"It’s also wise to drink heavy water as protection against tritium and neutrons. /s"

Dyhydrogen monoxide to the second, fourth, eighth, umpteenth power squared? I'm very concerned if dy-mon will dilute my intake of the essential CH3CH2OH I take in every few days. That could be a REAL problem.

Yes, I remember it well. Crystals drying on the picnic table in the screened in porch in the back of the house. Went out front and, when I came in through the front door, I accidentally let it slam. You can imagine what happened next.

Makes sense, thanks for sharing that. So a few bucks just in case a Nuke plant goes nuts near your town is a smart decision. Nothing paranoid about it

You admit the radio announced the snow was radioactive and you ignored your mother's directions. You'd get word of pasture contamination but let the cows graze anyway and you blame government for not caring?

That's the very thought process which created the Nanny State!!

Ignorance and paranoia. What a combo.

And if some enterprising person cashes in on that.....good for them.

Peace Friend. There is nothing like a good old scare to get us all riled up, and as we all know s%#^ happens. But the fact that some “scientist” said something, is a little like getting all riled up about global warming. All the best.

My 14 year old grandson really, really wants a bomb shelter. He brought it up a couple months ago and he hasn’t shut up about it since.

I told him he could build one this summer if he learns to run the backhoe.

Potassium iodide doesn’t protect anything really. Their thyroid might be fine but the rest of them will be shot.

“>>I hear that the best preventive is beer, served cold.<<

Dark or Light? Bottled, canned or on tap.”

It’s kinda like heavy water, you’ll need a really heavy beer....and pretzels. Strong pretzels are required. Probably a meat pizza, too.
