Has the influence of cable news peaked?
That's the conclusion of PEWs Project for Excellence in Journalism. According to their 2011 State of the News Media study all four cable networks saw their prime-time audiences fall in 2010.
MSNBC, Fox, HLN, and CNN lost between 39,000 and 331,000 viewers as cable -- the fourth most popular platform for news -- showed signs of becoming less important.
Fox News lost a whopping 11% of its prime time viewers (234,000 viewers), but that's not even the worst performance of the cablers.

Two reasons why Fox is losing viewers... Beck and Bill O’Reilly
When people are unemployed or underemployed, they tend to cut back on things they don’t need . . . like cable TV.
How so?

The entire paid TV industry, which includes cable, satellite, and phone companies, lost 216,000 customers in the second quarter.Paid TV subscriptions dip for the first time
Its gotta be O’Reilly. I could watch him before, but he seems to have gone off the deep-end with his simplistic explanations for everything. He also can’t let someone speak for more than 3 sentences without having to re-state the comment in his own words.
His constant search for, and whining about, “the speculators” who he believes are solely responsible for high gasoline prices is my exhibit A.
PEWs Project for Excellence in Journalism - The 21st century joke.
We know “most” now get their news from the internet online.
I don’t want Fox any longer not because I don’t like anyone and I I want to see pictures I turn on Fox it is just that I have all the news I can handle via the net before I get home.
Don't forget Horaldo and Shep Smith!
O’Reilly comes across as a pooly informed, pompus ass most of the time.
At least Beck does his homework, but it isn’t a message most want to hear. People had reather stick their head in the sand.
True enough.
I don’t know about BOR but I know his numbers are the highest on the network. Beck’s averages just south of 2 million per night which far exceeds the 750 thousand MSNBC watchers at 5 PM.
Yeah, ‘cause stuff never fluctuates.
Fox News lost a whopping 11% of its prime time viewers (234,000 viewers), but that’s not even the worst performance of the cablers.
people are sick of O’Reily and Hannity
Yep they are RIGHT, I won’t believe it.
I find myself watching Fox less and less because the majority of the time it all advertising or teasers, no news.
O’Reilly and Shep?
They also tend to have pretty horrible coverage of emerging events. I had to go to CNN to get anything substantial when Egypt fell. I had to shower afterward.
Fox was just bad.
Fox Business, with Claman, is getting worse too. Absolutely incapable of asking any question resulting in something newsworthy.
Also, with all the press outlets together, how come no real decent work on who and what caused the financial meltdown. I know its been localized to Congress and the ratings agencies, but nothing since, and nobody’s gone to jail.
I don’t care if the world is ending and Fox goes off the air-—I won’t watch CNN.
