The press has been saying a lot of sketchy stuff. NPR reported yesterday that they had received a report of hundreds of people from the plant area suffering from a low-grade radiation sickness, but all those people were evacuated before any releases.

It seems clear, they are not cooling down. Not only are they not cooling down they are MELTING. Mixing and melting.

Despite all the media hype that their is nothing to be concerned about, and we are all not going to be affected, is just that, media hype. Not facts.

That's because your general lame-stream journalist is sorely in need of remedial schooling; its like trying to teach algebra to your dog. Your typical 5th grader can write a more informative (and accurate) paragraph than that.

I explain the problem succinctly here (read the lead-article for the full Monty).

IF the reactor core is entirely exposed: the quake and tsunami damage (including the thousands of casualities at this time) are the least of Japan's least worries; such development will ruin a perfectly bad day to no end.

“Now there is a big difference between partially melted rods and a melt down. But once the rods get exposed you are looking at a massively more expensive cleanup. You can’t just pull the rods out for disposal any more since once they melt they tend to get stuck in place. So you have to dispose of the entire reactor vessel as a unit like they did at Three Mile Island. Getting this thing safely disposed of is going to be a seriously no fun engineering problem. Certainly one more than the Japanese need a the moment.”

So far, this is the big problem. The reactors are ruined and are going to be very expensive for the Japanese to clean up.

But we are still a couple of big steps away from a nuclear disaster. The rods have to actually melt down. The rods are radioactive material enclosed in a metal alloy. The radioactive stuff can produce 3000 degrees and the rods can only take 2200 degrees—that’s why they are desperate for water to cool the rods. So the rods staying intact is the first protection. If they are talking about how covered up the rods are in percentages, the rods have not melted down substantially (although the radioactive Cesium release suggests the exposed portions of the rods may have started that process). Then steel containment container has to breach and that takes a full meltdown (and I haven’t heard any evidence it has breached). In addition, once breached, the concrete and steel container compartment drains into a concrete torus below the container that spreads the melted materials out and contains them. So that third level of containment must be breached also for there to be a nuclear accident of the kind FREEPERS are worrying about.

It could still happen, especially if the concrete containment or the Torus were shattered by another major quake. But we’re still a long way from that result from the current state of the news.

Well, let’s take a look at the closest of the “close calls.”

Three Mile Island was a partial core meltdown, which occurred in part because the operators did the wrong things again and again in response to systems failures. In other words, it was pretty much as bad as it could get. People living adjacent to the plant received about the same radiation exposure as a couple of chest x-rays.

“Preparing for a multitude of Freepers to show and post there is no danger in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...”

No kidding! I don’t know if there really is a danger to the US or not — probably not, if I understand correctly — but the antagonism here toward anyone who would ask the question has been off the charts.

Definitely Epic Facepalm. Anyone who thinks that this is payback for Pearl or its OK to be happy about it has been mal-educated (thank you, public schools!) on their WWII history and don’t have any idea how many people died in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and the firebombing campaigns prior to them.

Typical ugly American BS, and more and more the ugly American syndrome is due to liberal-imposed ignorance.

The only thing I worry about is if plutonium (from the MOX or other rods) is released into the environment. I’m not sure of the mechanics of a core meltdown with respect to this but the TMI meltdown did not release plutonium and there was likely some amount of plutonium in those rods.

As for concerns of radiation spreading far from Japan that’s bunk. It takes a nuclear blast to propel debris into the upper atmosphere in order to get that type of dispersal. Any spillage here should be local.

Amen, brother. It is not Chernobyl II. The core temperature should not rise above 550 degrees. The core will not melt through the earth’s mantle. The reactors will be neutralized and never used again. And the poor woman on the West Coast who worries about her unborn baby can go back to sleep.

"The core will not melt through the earth’s mantle."

Right, that's what the containment vessel is there to prevent. It is to contain the fuel in event of a core meltdown. Chernobyl did not have a containment vessel hence the heightened concern then.

DEAR PRECIOUS BRO.

MUCH APPRECIATE YOUR PINGS AND MSGS.

PLEASE

KEEP THEM COMING.

HOWEVER, because of the urgency of msgs like the below, I’ll have to limite my responses to very occasionally. I’m extremely behind in a list of duties even on FR and so am going to try and focus more on the following priority.

May God be with all of good heart who truly seek Him;

To: Quix

I would help you out on the survey here bub, but frankly I’d say my family would skew the results. We’re, well, a little sensitive, so to speak, to this type of thing. I’d say that most of my family, including my aunts, uncles and most cousins, are in the 6.5 to 7.5 range normally but lately there’s been a serious ramping up of awareness.

Now, when I say a serious ramping up of awareness, I don’t mean that they’re having visions or dreams or anything like that, but I do mean that the entire family has been having the Holy Spirit stir them up, preparing them to leave. The general message has been “you don’t have time to dither any longer, make sure everything is in preperation and ready.”

Furthermore, several of my younger cousins, some as young as five and six, have been telling, not asking but telling, their parents that they need to be saved and wanting to know what they need to do to make it happen.

Now, I’ll grant you that these children are being raised in Christian families, but two in particular have reported being told by Christ Himself that they needed to be saved if they were going to make it to Heaven to see Him and that there wasn’t time to wait. Both reported, almost word for word from what I was told, that Christ was stressing to them the importance of immediate action and not to delay.

Several of the elders of the Church, men and women who have been Christians for 40 years or more, have said that they’ve never seen the Spirit move with a sense of urgency like this among the children before.

One in particular, who just celebrated the 40th anniversary of his salvation this last Sunday and who’s been involved in the Youth Program since the mid 70’s, reported that it’s obvious that the Holy Spirit is moving with great urgency among the children of the Church because of the sheer numbers of kids coming to salvation and the determination to attain it that they’re showing.

One other point that I’d like to make is that this isn’t an emotional responce to a preacher or a particular sermon, because most of these kids have startled their parents with these requests during the middle of the week when they weren’t in church. I cannot stress enough the level of sheer determination that is showing up in these kids, especially since most are under the age of 10.

Also, these kids aren’t coming to their parents with this information in packs like you’d see if it was an emotional or peer-generated response, but they’re coming in ones and twos. In the last 30 to 60 days, I’d say that I’ve heard of close to a half-dozen kids coming to Christ for salvation in my family’s church alone, which may have 40 or 50 families that attend at the most.

Other churches in the area with which we keep in contact with are reporting the same thing though, so it’s not just one church going through a revival.

Speaking of revival, I’d also like to point out that the current revival that has broken out isn’t like before where the churches would pray for a revival to sweep through and then tried to generate it.

This has been completely God generated, with several preachers and pastors stating that they’ve been led by the Spirit, often just moments before delivering a message, to change the topic and preach on the immediate and urgent need for salvation and a return to Christ for those who are back-slidden.

It’s often a coordinated effort on the Spirit’s part, as I’ve seen Sunday School teachers forced by the Spirit to change their lesson plans at the last second and then later hear the preacher, who wasn’t in the Sunday School class and didn’t know of the changes to the lesson plan, do the exact same thing in the pulpit just moments later.

I personally saw this happen this weekend and was privilaged to sit under one of the most powerful messages that I’ve ever heard preached, bar none. The message was simple; Jesus Christ can change your life and save your soul from hell, but only if you trust Him and you don’t have time to wait any longer. It was, literally, repent or perish.

If I had to quantify the awareness now, I’d say that the average adult is around the 8.5 - 9.0 range now, but the children are completely off the scale and in a league of their own now.

A large part of the reason that the adults are so aware though is because of how adamant and stirred up the children have become. I’m not trying to diminish the changes in the preaching, because it’s some of the most powerful stuff I’ve ever sat under, but I can’t even begin to describe what is going on with the kids. It’s beyond anything I’ve ever seen before.

Appears the problem is they’ve been attempting to pump seawater among three reactors with all but one pump itself failing...so it’s not enough working pumps available to get the sea water where it needs to go...thus all three are at some point of exposed rods...meltdown in all three.

I was translating the japanese news report on justin.tv and the rods have been “exposed” from water since the beginning when the backup collant pump failed.

The fuel rods are in their control rods and there is seawater pumped into the base to continue cooling while they expel gas from the cooling chamber to lower pressure.

BOTH THE TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE ARE FALLING.

These reactors will be cold stopped, but it will take a while as they have to use unorthodox methods.

I am actually impressed how competent and honest Tokyo Electric has been though all of this.

PUMPS are the problem...most have failed....so limtted working pumps used between all three reactors. Not enough to cover all three with water.
