No. 2 reactor of Japan's Fukushima No.1 nuke plant loses cooling functions: agency

TOKYO, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said Monday that the No. 2 reactor of Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant lost its cooling functions at 1:25 p.m. ( 0425 GMT).
Helo water bombing.
P!
Can they destroy the reactor with saltwater?
Causes rust. Three reactors now permanently toast. That is what that flipping Tsunami wave did.
Oh crap. If #2 follows #1 and #3, it will also explode its outer containment building.
Just saw on CBS that they moved USS Ronald Reagan after her crew took a months worth of radiation in one hour.
So that means they assume partial meltdown in three reactors. Think I am going to bed and going to dream about a place far, far away. Monday will probably be a long day.
We may need a way to track those radiative atmospheric areas. And waiting for alarms to go off on an Aircraft Carrier, is not a very cost effective method. Their density is low now, but may get higher if the situation worsens.
They don’t want to destroy their infrastructure. That’s why they let them get so hot.
Yep.
And if the cores melt, it’s an expensive cleanup.
An economic disaster, but not a public health one.
There was an article last night (american nuclear society) that said the sea water option was designed in from the start. It will permanently disable the reactors, but they are not just winging it.
The unimaginable devastation will never be know.
Fail safe. You let ocean in and all bets are off.
There will be boiling and venting, but a 5 inch thick steel container is going to stay sound with ocean water, just not usable for power anymore. They didn't put it in as a fail-safe without thinking about the consequences.
It’s safe. IMO.
“They dont want to destroy their infrastructure. Thats why they let them get so hot.”
These reactors were already scheduled to be shutdown within the next year.
It’s becoming increasingly difficult to believe the radiation won’t spread to the U.S.
As in "ain't gonna happen"?
