The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and other US Navy ships in the waters off the quake zone in eastern Japan were repositioned after the detection of a low-level radiation plume from the troubled Fukushima nuclear plant located 100 miles away.
According to 7th Fleet Commander and Spokesman Jeff Davis, the ships were moved away from the downwind direction of the plant as a precautionary measure on Sunday.
The carrier is one of seven US Navy ships that were quickly moved to the eastern coast of Japan to assist with relief operations after Friday's earthquake and tsunami.
The ship's crew was exposed to a very low level of radiation.
"The maximum potential radiation dose received by any ship's force personnel aboard the ship when it passed through the area was less than the radiation exposure received from about one month of exposure to natural background radiation from sources such as rocks, soil, and the sun, " Davis said.

This explosion sounds pretty serious.
Great, time to use the Countermeasure Washdown System that never worked right...

A friend’s son-in-law is stationed on this ship. Hope the situation is okay for the crew.
Looks like that has changed!
They must be doing something because the Japanese population are already talking about Operation Tomodachi.
Staff from a Japanese airplane magazine are having Operation Tomodachi patches made up to give to the American flight crews.
Would the carriers be able to generate the electricity that the reactor pumps are lacking?
Maybe the captain is an Odmama appointee.
The carrier USS Lexington supplied power to Tacoma, WA for roughly 30 days in 1929-30 when that city suffered a shortage. I am curious as to what a CVN could supply for a city.
FYI... I’m worried out guys our going to get radiation. The government of Japan has proven they cannot be trusted. They have not been honest about the nuclear reactors. Perhaps to prevent panic? Nevertheless, the situation has gone from bad to worst. They need to quit B.S. the public.
I hope our guys are not like the Chernobayl guys that went into the area to put out the fire and rescue people. Most of them are dead or dying off. After all the only thing that stops radiation is Led.
Did you see after that one reactor blew up (notice they always show it to you from a good distance distance)the plume is blowing out to sea and it looks like we may get it. Should know for sure in a few days. Heard that reactor is thousand feet tall so we watched radio active Isotopes blow a thousand feet into the air when they got too hot. No one can get close to the reactor, but I heard on Drudge that radiation readings were one thousand times higher.
There’s been a lot of discussion about that on threads, the consensus seems to be yes, but it would be quite a task to make it all work and faster and easier to simply fly in generators. Why they haven’t done that, if in fact they haven’t is beyond me.
another explosion at the plant, coming in on Japanese tv, from contact in Tokyo
there are now 6 reactors in trouble
Tokyo has been shaking for three days now
buildings in Tokyo are rolling now
flashing red on Japanese tv in Tokyo means 7+ quake
still shaking buildings rolling
Yeah a 7 woke me up a few hours ago.. another just hit about 8 min ago... they are coming non-stop.. most small tremors, every once in awhile, then another bigger one comes in..
Bikk
The administration doesn't have a clue. But, it sounds like the RR's doing search and rescue missions for the time being.
This is not Chernobyl: different design, these reactors have cooling problems after auto-shutdown, etc. The correct spelling is "lead." You have no evidence Japan is being dishonest about the reactors. It was a containment building, not a reactor, that exploded. In fact it's been two of them, caused by hydrogen gas. That "one thousand times higher" was early on, not sustained, and was equivalent to a years exposure in 24 hrs.
NHK World reports No 2 reactor has lost all coolant, they may vent air and the containment building my explode.
