Actually they were from the east coast. They butchered other tribes and then got their backsides handed to them the entire way across to the plains. The other tribes were not particularly fond of them (many are not until this day). They settled in the Dakotas after wiping out the other indigenous tribes there.

I don't think it was the Indians, per se.

Although the proper name for those tribes is the Lakota people. Sioux was what their enemies called them. It was not a term of endearment. OTOH, it was a term with a certain amount of respect, since in general those enemies got their asses kicked. :)
