It was not immediately clear if the eruption was a direct result of the massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake that rocked northern areas Friday, unleashing a fierce tsunami and sparking fears that more than 10,000 may have been killed.

10,000 estimated. I'll wait for the official final number before having a reaction.

It appears Japan is suffering its own localized apocalypse. They’ve suffered an earthquake, aftershocks that are the magnitude of most major quakes, a tsunami, a meltdown (with the possible of more) and now a volcanic eruption. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone and I hope the Japanese are able to survive.

I should remind people that the Home Islands of Japan are in the same geological situation as the Indonesian Archipelago--they're built up due to nearby subduction of tectonic plates. That's why Japan has many earthquakes and a lot of active volcanoes, and similar to the situation in Indonesia.

Indeed, even the famous Mt. Fuji is still classed as an active volcano even though it has not erupted in over 300 years! The majority of volcanoes in Japan are pretty much listed in the active status even now.

So this eruption sequence really began in January. There is certainly a remarkable about of dramatic activity in the Pacific rim. Perhaps the Okhotsk Plate is on the move; that could possibly explain the increased volcanic activity in the south and the monster quakes in the north.

Seems like the director who made this Japanese xenophobic disaster comedy

(in response to this other disaster film)

Scientists predict that Japan will sink within 40 years, due to subduction of a tectonic plate to the west. However, Dr. Tadokoro, who leads an oceanic scientific team that includes Toshiro, calculates that this will happen far sooner, in only 338.54 days. He presents his findings to Prime Minister Yamamoto who decides to create a new department for impending disaster relief assigning Saoro Takamori to cover the new duties, since of all his ministers she will take it seriously but also bring "heart" to the process. As further earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions devastate Japan, the government pleads with other countries to take refugees...

really got it wrong.

Please pass this on to the FReepers who are comparing this to the shuttle disaster... challenger.

Apparently one teacher = 10,000 Japanese Citizens.

Yet the same Freeper refused to mention the Columbia disaster.

Once again, feminism, one FEMALE FEMINIST teacher = 10,000.

There are folks that need to be purged from this website ASAP, I do not want to be associated with these disgusting, vile horrendous monsters.

They are whacked out libs who are infiltrating Free Republic to push their radical agenda. They mention Challenger but Columbia??? What's that??? Oh sorry, no liberal feminist teacher aboard, so their death's are irrelevant.

PLEASE ADMINS BAN THE LIBERAL TROLLS!!!

Jim Robinson himself told me that every post is archived if folks like goseminoles can compare the disaster in Japan to the Challenger explosion than this site is deemed a joke in the eyes of the world!!!

The FReeper is named goseminoles, go search his posts. He believes that 10,000 + deaths = one death of a rad lib teacher!!!

According to goseminoles Christa McAuliffe's death outweighed every single death from 1986 to 2011. Don't you love that we have such brain damaged morons who belittle the legitimacy of this website?

Completely bipassed the Columbia explosion but Christa McAuliffe's death was more important than the deaths of tens of thousands of Japanese, hey goseminoles congrats you are a racist scum!!!! And thanks to google your posts are archived. I pray to God you are banned!!!

Unfortunately, in addition to northern Japan being already devastated with a huge lose of life, nuke power plants blowing up, plus dangerous volcanic activity, many powerful aftershocks, and the constant threat of additional tsunamis - both Yokohama & Tokyo are due for an offshore earthquake, likely 8.3 or above on the Ritchie scale, plus a massive tsunami, which will leave both mega-cities in ruins, causing a major sell off across international stock markets, possibly a full blown crash, contingent on other explosive potentials in the Middle East, involving Iran and Syria instigating war against Israel. Time will surly tell.

God created the heavens and the earth. The amount of time between these creations and the time of Man is not understood. Perhaps millions of years.

We are his most precious creation. Still though, we are but a blip on the enormous screen when time and space are considered. What happens with earthquakes and volcanoes are much larger blips. We lose concept that our existence is but a tiny fraction of space in the scale of God's creation.
