I think he had to claim Dreams as self-written because of his enormous ego. No one would have cared if he hadn't claimed he wrote it himself, but since he did, for some it became proof of His Tremendous Intellect. Once that lie became part of the Obama Mythology, there was no going back.

His enormous ego and narcissism dictates that he must claim all the credit for the book. It has been used as "proof" of his great intellect, how incredibly smart he is, how much more intelligent he is than the rest of us. I am sure he tells himself that this is exactly how he would have written it himself, if he'd had the time. Or something. It's his words, after all, Ayers was just a scribe. Yes, that's it. It's really his book and his writing. (In his tiny mind and huge ego).
