I am thinking about buying some iodide pills just to be safe.

I would recommend everyone have KI pills as part of their emergency preparedness gear, regardless.
Just called my dad to make sure he had the bottle I sent him. It’s right in his medicine drawer.

Iodine-131 is only one of dozens of fission products. Strontium-90, Cesium-137 are the main bugaboos. All these have relatively short half-lives on the order of a few years to a few decades. Iodine-131's half-life is only 8 days. Keeping it out of your thyroid gland by OD-ing on potassium iodide doesn't solve the other issues mentioned.
Breeding products like Plutonium-239 can be much longer-lived. Pu-239's half-life is about 23,000 years. It is an intense emitter of alpha particles....they're harmless outside your body....inside from breathing or swallowing... you are in a world of hurt.
