Breeding products like Plutonium-239 can be much longer-lived. Pu-239's half-life is about 23,000 years. It is an intense emitter of alpha particles....they're harmless outside your body....inside from breathing or swallowing... you are in a world of hurt.
Sorry, one only gets reborn once.
I do know you can build or make shelters - in a basement for example - that can protect you from most of the gamma radiation if you can stay in them a few days. Portable camp toilets, water, food, etc can all be stockpiled in there beforehand. Concrete block, heavy wood, then covered with heavy tarp/blankets and such will greatly reduce gamma ray damage.
A nuke plant falling into the Pacific Ocean is NOT going to poison the whole ocean. I sailed across the Atlantic when I was in the navy in 76-80. it took a week and the Pacific is 3 times bigger than the Atlantic. Any nuclear material that fell into the Pacific Ocean will be diluted and not be able to affect anything outside of it's local area and probably not much then. You obviously have no conception of how big an ocean is and how much water is involved.
Same thing with fallout making its way across the Pacific. Did we get killed because of Chernobyl? That was FAR worse than the Japanese incidents. The fallout is not going to be concentrated and then fly over here just to rain on our parades. It's going to disperse in the weeks that it's going to take to travel over here and we'll be exposed to far <1% of any radiation that is released.
Take it easy people. Don't let this spook you like this.
I'm not sure about that - I believe that there has been some damage to the fuel rods where low water levels allowed melting of the metal housing of the fuel rods themselves, but if I understand the definition of "meltdown", the fuel rods essentially have to melt down into and through the floor of the containment housing.
There is information out there, on another thread that describes the situation with some detail, but in a manner that us non-nukes can understand.
The fact that they're flooding Unit 1's reactor with sea water and Boron indicates that they are basically scuttling that unit. It's the oldest of the units in that plant anyway, and I've seen a couple of posts indicating that it was nearing the time frame when it would be de-commissioned anyway.
Yes you are correct, KI pills only prevent radioactive iodine from being absorbed in the thyroid. The others it does not protect you from, but hey, it’s one less radioactive isotope to worry about.
KI pills do not reduce your need to have a decent shelter in your basement that can help absorb the most damaging gamma radiation. Alpha radiation can be stopped by clothing. Most beta radiation can be stopped by regular house walls. Gamma needs to be stopped by earth/concrete/dense layers of material. Most civil defense makeshift shelters are in the basement underneath heavy dense desks, wood, etc covered with heavy blankets and tarps and covering the entrance to them and staying there at least 2-3 days, only venturing out a few minutes if absolutely necessary.
If you read my post, I said the same thing you said. Please do not post to me saying I am over-reacting when I post a calm post trying not to have people over-react.
ANd if you didn’t mean it that way, I apologize for takign it that way, but that’s how it reads to me.
Waaah.
We used to test hydrogen bombs right here in the USA and somehow we all lived. It may not be good, what's going on in Japan, but you can be sure that the MSM will make it sound as if the world were going to end. It's not.

Did you miss that part.
I honestly haven’t had tears yet... until I read that post of yours... take care and God Bless..

My apologies. :)
Drudge is blaring that a sixth reactor has cooling problems. Perhaps you should take your complaint up with him.
Only if the ocean has a thyroid
Other reports stated that it can only be produced if there was partial meltdown. This issue was reported over 8-10 hours ago.
I have been feeling aftershocks nonstop since the big one.. and pre shocks since Tuesday.. but they feel like a normal tremor, especially compared to yesterday :p
All is well here unless/until something about 7.2+ hits
take care... (here is another one while I am typing.. but feels ‘normal’ :p)

Thanks for the reply. I hadn’t heard the report that said it could only be created if there was a partial meltdown. I had heard later tonite that one of the japanese nuke officials did say there was a partial meltdown of the fuel rods.
You do not vent hydrogen gas into the main containment building. Others have pointed out that US reactors actually have a backup system in the roof that blows the hydrogen gas before it can build up and destroy the outer containment building. They were venting it to the outside, then radiation readings got too high and they were ordered to stop venting. Then the explosion occurred a little while later. So they must have a leak in the reactor system.
Ha...well do the fish??
I believe the 3 (reported so far) were about 1.5 miles north of the reactor waiting on a chopper rescue to pick them up when it happened... if there are more, I haven’t heard about it yet..
