An Idaho legislative committee voted yesterday 11-8 to move a measure that would allow college students and staff to carry firearms on college and university campuses, a proposal that could cause multiple coronaries down in Olympia.
Neighboring Idaho is gun country. This column recently reported about a lawsuit filed by a student at the University of Idaho in Moscow, just across the border from Pullman and Washington State University. That lawsuit seeks to force the college to allow him to simply keep his firearm at an on-campus apartment.
This new measure, sponsored by State Rep. Erik Simpson (R-Idaho Falls) is designed to provide security to students who feel they do not have it. Opponents think guns do not belong on college campuses. Proponents suggest there are already guns there, in the hands of bad guys, and the good guys merely want a level playing field.
Naturally, campus administrators and campus cops are opposed to the idea.

It is better to have a phone call tree than to have weapons on campus. /sarc
Tell that to those people who were shot at Virginia Tech. And the college in Canada where fourteen girls were shot dead.
In my college dorm room way, way back in the late 70’s/early 80’s, I had a .270 WinMag, a 12 guage shotgun, and/or a Ruger Super Blackhawk, depending on whether it was bird or deer season ...
Nobody died, nobody was threatened, nobody was endangered.
And of course back then no one shot up college campuses either.
I think this is a dang good idea. The Eastern Idaho Technical College is right across the street from Walmart in Idaho Falls.
Good for them.
Since the Libs won’t protect the kids, they have to do it themselves. I keep thinking what if one, just one of those kids at Virginia Tech had a gun.
Maybe you had better clarify the term “Vandals.” Many on this national post, don’t know that the schools mascot is a “Vandal.” Those students in Moscow at U of I, are not “vandals” of the criminal type.
Just a point of clarification.
I think you’ve clarified it quite nicely, thank you.
It reminds me that the high school sports Teams for Yuma High School are “Criminals”.

I kept a 20 double in my dorm room in the mid 70’s went bird hunting on the weekends.
I work there. I dunno...
KIDDING! ;-)
It is a little amusing to see the usual bed-wetters going through the classic "Dodge City Blood In The Streets" stuff they always do. I reminded one of them that what is being contemplated is nothing more than the existing law as soon as he steps a foot off campus. "You run into me at the grocery store, there's maybe a 50% chance I'm armed. Does that bother you? This is Idaho, guy, better get used to it." It goes to show how much an ivory tower the environment is, actually,
It's only my opinion but it's short and sweet: Gentlemen should be armed.
