Quake moved Japan coast 8 feet; shifted Earth's axis

The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.

"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).

how does this compare with “normal” earth wobble?

For one thing, this would be a sharp change, as opposed to the rather smooth, long period changes usually seen.

It would be really interesting to see how precise satellite ranging (as for GPS satellites) reflected the quake, if at all.

“>> shifted the Earth on its axis.

Relative to what? Did it shift back?”

Which axis? Magnetic axis? Rotational axis? Did the core shift relative to the crust?

If the rotational axis shifted suddenly, given the amount of momentum involved, the energy released by such a shift would probably mean the entire crust ruptures, given that the crust itself is a paper-thin layer floating on the rest of the earth’s bulk.

I find this whole claim dubious; look at the source of this claim: Italy.

Yes, its coming folks.

Revelation 6:12
And I saw, when he had opened the sixth seal, and behold there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair: and the whole moon became as blood:

Algore, cleanup in aisle six...

Actually there are 5 earthquakes mentioned in Revelation: 6:12, 8:5, 11:13, 11:19 and 16:18. But what happened yesterday is not any of them, the Church has not been raptured and Anti Christ has not been revealed (as bad as Obama is, he is not AC). But we are getting close! COME SOON LORD JESUS!

A worldwide quake seems to be implied here. Compared to which this little quiver in Japan would be nothing.

Seriously: Applying Occam's Razor...

THANK YOU!!! I was going to say something like this, but didn't know how to put it delicately so as not to offend the religious folks. GAH! The Devil isn't coming to take us away, people. Get with the times. The Dark Ages are over.

Matthew 5:44
“But I say to you, love your enemies
and pray for those who persecute you,
that you may be children of your heavenly Father,
for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good,
and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.”

You tried to minimize this tragedy and then did the same to good Christians beliefs.

You want me to you harsher words or something?

Sorry that’s all you get.

We have had a few years of catastrophic earthquakes, floods, and devastating wild fires world wide. The “peaceful” religion of Islam continues its malignant spread across the western world. There is a world wide food shortage and the world economy is in serious trouble. Global climate change (not man made) seems to be a reality. And, the earth’s magnetic poles are in the process of reversing, and no can even guess with any certainty how that will affect the earth in the long run. Like so many others on this thread, the talk around our dinner table has more often centered around the End Times, which until very recently, it never had.

Global climate change (not man made) seems to be a reality.

The world was warmer in medieval times than now. Also, there has been no statistically significant "global warming" for the last 15 years. There is no "global climate change". There are natural cycles of weather variability, and that's all we've been experiencing.

Moved 8 feet in what direction - lateral or vertical? If vertical, up or down?

Just curious.

what??? That is NOwhere near I ever read! I remember using a 7 degree variance on a compass when in the boy scouts!

Well, both poles are moving towards the equator, and the magnetic field is weakening. They have been 'on the move' for a long time, and like many other forces of nature, are slow, but relentless.

Pretty soon you may have to use a 180 degree variance (or just paint new N, S labels on your compass).

You may have focused on one part of my post rather than examine it in context. What may or may not be the cause of the unusual world wide changes in weather the last few years is not relevant to what I wrote.
