Associated Press

Sacramento, Calif. (AP) - The nationwide debate over liberalizing gun laws spilled into a federal courtroom in Sacramento on Thursday as gun-rights groups challenged how much discretion California's law enforcement officials have in issuing concealed weapons permits...

--snip--

That gives Prieto arbitrary discretion over a fundamental right to bear arms guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution, said Alan Gura, an attorney from Alexandria, Va. Gura is representing gun rights groups in California and groups that have filed similar lawsuits in Maryland, Massachusetts and New York...

First, no law abiding citizen should need a permit to carry any piece of personal property that poses no passive threat to any other person.

Second, I was wondering if the more enterprising of California's counties could put into place a "shall issue" policy for any law abiding resident of California who comes looking for a permit. While this would be a major hassle and inconvenience for many people, it might be a major money-maker for these counties.

I do not have a firearms permit, because I refuse to pay $500 for a right guaranteed by the Constitution.
It is liberals who prevent me from enjoying the benefits of the Constitution.

$500 for a permit is totally ridiculous! I think it's about $140 in TX, which is also too damn high. They can probably process the necessary paperwork for $50.

I've been hesitant to get a license because of the fees and the fact that I can carry legally in my car anyway, but I guess you can't put a price on your safety. Then again, you have places like IL and OH where some people want to publish the names of every gun owner and CHL.

It costs $25.00 in Pennsylvania. No classes either. Fill out the application that you can get online, send it in, the Sheriff's office does the background check and tells you to come down, hand him $25.00 and they take your picture and hand you your permit.

This is still low hanging fruit, IMHO. I want to hear the argument that you don't pay for a right.

Some time back I believe the Police Chief of Lodi did just that. It wasn't long before the legislature changed the law so that one could only obtain a permit from his city or county of residence.
