I can’t imagine how anyone could have made any calculations to come up with this figure in what, 14 hours?

I agree. Seems there would be way too much widespread chaos to come up with any reasonable numbers this soon.

Probably based on populations of NE Japan towns destroyed by the tsunami - some of them miles inland from the coast so totally unprepared to seek high gorund

helo coverage showed the disaster in Sendai as it was happening, showed little sign of movement or life after the massive first wave went through. One poor soul waving a white towel out her window in an entire city block

They should get better idea of survivors at light tomorrow
